Job Description
A waterjet operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining a waterjet cutting machine to produce precise parts by accurately interpreting technical drawings and specifications, loading materials onto the machine, monitoring the cutting process, inspecting finished products for quality control, and performing routine maintenance to ensure optimal machine performance. Skills in reading blueprints, basic CNC programming, and adherence to safety protocols are often required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Safety Compliance: Complies with all safety rules and guidelines set forth by UPM and OSHA. Adheres to all safety procedures and wears required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Machine operation: Loading and unloading materials onto the waterjet cutting machine according to project requirements.
- Programming: Setting up CNC programs based on provided blueprints and specifications to control the cutting path.
- Quality control: Inspecting finished parts for accuracy, tolerances, and surface quality.
- Maintenance: Performing routine cleaning, lubrication, and minor adjustments on the waterjet machine.
- Material handling: Safely moving and positioning large or heavy materials using appropriate lifting equipment.
- Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving minor machine malfunctions.
- Documentation: Maintaining detailed records of production runs, including material usage and quality checks.
- Perform all additional duties as requested by the manager/supervisor/lead.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- High school diploma or GED; with one to two years of related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination.
- Technical skills: Experience operating CNC waterjet cutting machines, understanding of basic CNC programming, and ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Measurement skills: Proficiency in using precision measuring tools like calipers, micrometers, and rulers.
- Attention to detail: High accuracy and precision for precise cutting.
- Problem-solving abilities: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot machine issues.
- Physical capabilities: Ability to lift and maneuver heavy materials.
- Computer literacy: Basic computer skills for accessing and managing data.
