Job description

Responsible for providing physician services, including assessing and managing patients in the clinic and other locations, such as hospitals, assisted living facilities, and ambulatory surgery centers, within the scope of licensing, training, and credentialing, depending on the specialty.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collaborate with the medical director, administrative management, office manager, and nursing staff to facilitate patient management across the healthcare system.
  2. Exercise independent judgment in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical procedures, as credentialed by UVA Health System.
  3. Document comprehensive health histories and physical assessments; initiate emergency procedures like CPR as needed.
  4. Formulate diagnoses, identify health risks, and communicate findings to the healthcare team.
  5. Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests, such as X-rays and lab tests, in consultation with staff.
  6. Perform procedures and surgeries within scope of practice and UVA credentials/privileges.
  7. Order medications, treatments, and therapies following Virginia prescriptive regulations.
  8. Request consultations and referrals to specialists and other healthcare providers as needed.
  9. Evaluate patient responses to treatments and interventions.
  10. Provide education and support to patients and families regarding disease processes and treatment plans.
  11. Participate in on-call responsibilities in practice or inpatient settings.
  12. Manage patients according to UVA policies and procedures.
  13. Engage in institutional practice settings when appropriate.
  14. Assess systems and processes, recommend improvements, and implement strategies for better healthcare delivery.
  15. Promote effective communication between families and healthcare teams.
  16. Report births, deaths, disease outbreaks, and other critical information timely and in accordance with legal requirements.
  17. Meet quality standards set by the Medical Director and UVA Health System.
  18. Serve on committees and participate in educational activities for medical students, interns, residents, and nurses.
  19. Prepare reports, claims, and correspondence related to professional services.
  20. Support the professional practice of the group and perform other duties as assigned, consistent with professional standards.
  21. Follow policies and procedures of UVA Health System, CMS, and contracted payers.
  22. Accurately assign CPT and ICD codes for billing.
  23. Assist with implementing policies related to payor requirements to ensure claim payment.
  24. Contribute to the education of healthcare professionals and develop educational materials.
  25. Stay current professionally through continuing education and conferences.
  26. Serve as a clinical resource for healthcare practitioners.
  27. Seek opportunities for professional growth.
Minimum Requirements

Education: Graduate of an accredited medical school with an MD or DO degree. Completion of an accredited residency in the chosen specialty.

Experience: None required.

Licensure: Board certification in the specialty (must be obtained within 2 years if newly graduated), unrestricted license to practice in Virginia, and current DEA certificate.

Skills: Proficiency in using a personal computer and computerized scheduling systems.

Physical Demands

Requires standing for prolonged periods, frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive motions such as keyboard use. Must have proficient communication, auditory, and visual skills, attention to detail, and the ability to lift/push/pull 50-100 lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, infectious materials, and other hazards.
