Job description

[REVSHARE] Disclaimer this is a revenue share position with NO SALARY initially, although additional funding may be available if we can secure it. Almost half of our team has AAA experience so we are optimistic about our chances to receive funding. We plan to provide salary to our team once we secure funding. We have been in talks with publishers and look to finalize funding once we complete our vertical slice in the upcoming months.

Your Role

As aTechnical Artist, you’ll play a critical role in the visual and performance fidelity ofShadows of the Lost, a high-fidelity Soulslike action RPG. You’ll bridge the gap between artists and engineers—helping optimize assets, build smart material and VFX systems, and ensure the game's world looks and runs beautifully across all environments.

Working directly with the art team, designers, and programmers, you will help develop workflows, visual tools, and shaders that elevate the game’s aesthetic and performance while enabling faster, more streamlined development.

About the game

Shadows of the Lost is a dark fantasy soulslike that takes the genre to haunting new depths, blending momentum-based combat, a gripping story, and a unique companion system. Set in a fractured world corrupted by an otherworldly shadow, the ruins of once-great civilizations echo with the lingering power of demigods who forged deadly pacts with mortal rulers.

As an adventurer, traverse desolate landscapes shaped by twisted myths. From a dark fantasy style frostbitten ruins of Norse sagas to the cursed tombs of Egyptian kings. Unearth relics tied to ancient powers, forge bonds with companions, and confront the creeping influence of the Shadows of The Lost.

Responsibilities

  • Optimize 3D assets for performance, including LODs, merging, and instancing workflows.
  • Develop complex and performantMaterials and Shadersusing UE5’s Material Graph or HLSL.
  • Collaborate with VFX and environment artists to integrateNiagara FX, decals, and dynamic elements (e.g., snow layering, mist, blood decals).
  • Build tools (e.g., Editor Utility Widgets) to automate art-related workflows.
  • Implement and maintainlighting and post-process systems, contributing to the game’s gothic mood and atmosphere.
  • Assist withperformance profilingand scene debugging (GPU/CPU optimization).
  • Collaborate with programmers to ensure art assets work seamlessly with gameplay systems.

What We’re Looking For

  • Solid experience as aTechnical Artistin Unreal Engine (preferably UE5).
  • Proficiency with material creation, optimization, and visual scripting in UE.
  • Understanding ofperformance budgets, especially for VFX and environment rendering.
  • Experience working with tools likeNiagara, Lumen, etc.
  • Ability to write or modify basic shaders (Material Graph or HLSL).
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset.
  • A portfolio showcasing your technical art contributions in real-time environments.

Not Required but Nice to Have

  • Experience with Unreal Engine Blueprints or Editor Utility Widgets.
  • Knowledge of profiling tools (e.g., Stat Unit, GPU Visualizer).
  • Familiarity with procedural workflows or runtime VFX systems.
  • Previous experience working onSoulslike, dark fantasy, or action RPGs.
  • Experience working on ashipped title.
