Job description

Epoch Games is a volunteer-based, all-online, global game development team. The Co-Founders of Epoch Games were originally part of a Modding Team developing the total conversion Middle Earth Roleplaying Project (MERP) mod for the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Currently, Epoch Games is developing The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order (LoA: SO). LoA: SO is an in-development indie open-world RPG set in an original fantasy world. The game is being developed using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4. See our Benefits page for more information about what we can (and can't) offer Team Members at this time.

NOTE: The address listed is our central office, but we are working as a completely remote development team at this time. No relocation is necessary.

Job Description

In this volunteer position, you will create landscapes and building interiors for LoA: SO, based on concepts and layouts, in Unreal Engine. We are still building a long list of assets; we expect our Level Designers to be resourceful with the assets they use. Houdini tools have been developed for our project; familiarity with Houdini is recommended but not required. Experience with Blueprint Scripting and Quixel Megascans is also recommended.

Effective communication is crucial for a smooth pipeline. You must communicate clearly with team members, especially with 3D Artists regarding asset needs. If comfortable, you may assist junior members in relevant areas. Responsibilities include following team policies and attending meetings via Slack.

  • Ability to create detailed landscapes and interiors in Unreal Engine 4
  • Ability to optimize using LODs (Level of Detail)
Recommended Requirements
  • Experience with Houdini for procedural development tools
  • Blueprint Scripting experience in Unreal Engine 4
  • Usage of Quixel Megascans Asset Library
Required Software
  • Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4
Optional Software
  • SideFX's Houdini (a copy can be provided if needed)
Minimum Hardware Requirements
  • The ability to run Unreal Engine 4
  • Sufficient disk space and internet speed to download at least 25 GB of game files
