Job summary

Coppin State University is seeking a University Police Officer IV. The role commands a shift, supervises staff, and ensures adherence to department standards while coordinating complex operations. The officer must hold Maryland sworn officer certification and a valid MD driver’s license; educational substitutes may apply.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience: Two years as a sworn police officer.
• Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission and a valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C driver's license.
• Equivalent substitutions: 30 college credits = 1 year of experience.
• Knowledge and skills: rights and laws, decision making, communication, diversity, and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Supervise shift operations and staff; set work priorities and evaluate personnel.
• Monitor performance for adherence to standards and take corrective action.
• Prepare reports and recommend improvements to operations.
• Investigate citizen complaints regarding police performance.
• Assume command at serious accidents or incidents.
• Inspect personnel under supervision.
• Review and edit reports from assigned staff.
• Perform duties of a University Police Officer II and III.
• Other related duties as needed by departmental requirements.
