Job Description:
Under direct supervision, participates in formal and on-the-job training programs to achieve and maintain the Maryland Police Training Commission and institutional requirements. Performs the duties of an entry-level Police Officer.
Responsibilities:
- Overview: The Police Department seeks Police Officers to perform campus law enforcement duties, ensuring the protection of college personnel, property, and equipment. Reports typically to a Police Sergeant and establishes a visible police presence on campus. Responsibilities include:
- Patrol assigned areas, observe unsafe or suspicious incidents, and take appropriate action.
- Enforce college rules, laws, and ordinances; report infractions.
- Write clear, detailed reports of observations and actions.
- Enforce traffic laws and parking restrictions.
- Report unsafe conditions that endanger public safety.
- Respond to suspicious incidents, altercations, or accidents on campus.
- Investigate offenses on university property.
- Participate in prosecutions by providing testimony and evidence.
- Assist law enforcement agencies as needed.
- Provide customer service, including directions and assistance during events.
- Perform building security checks and provide access to facilities.
- Attend and complete in-service training as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Pass the Maryland Police Correctional Training Commission Examination prior to employment.
- Pass background check, physical exam, and drug test.
- Possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License.
- Perform outdoor tasks under varying conditions, including in heavy traffic.
- Meet physical standards, including agility tests.
- Knowledge of law enforcement principles, college rules, and local laws.
- Ability to react calmly in emergencies, observe objectively, follow instructions, and communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of crime prevention and community policing; background check required.
