Position Announcement – Assistant or Associate Professor
Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering Program
The Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering Program in the new Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment (ESSIE) at the University of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to begin August 2012. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in an appropriate field of science or engineering.
We seek creative, highly productive scientists who have demonstrated innovative research in quantitative analysis in the broad area of coastal engineering and physical oceanography. Preference will be given to candidates with a research focus on coastal turbulence and transport processes, approached within the larger context of climate change, coastal hazards, and environmental sustainability. Research approaches can include theoretical, numerical, or experimental methods. The successful candidate will be expected to build a strong externally funded research program, provide professional service, teach and develop courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, develop collaborations within the Coastal Program, and pursue research and synergistic activities with other members of ESSIE in support of sustainable coastal systems.
Interested candidates should submit a complete curriculum vitae referencing position number 00006287, a 2-3 page statement of teaching and research plans, up to three representative journal articles (co-) authored by the applicant, and the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of five references to Dr. Alex Sheremet, Search Committee Chair, electronically at jobsearch@coastal.ufl.edu. Questions may be directed to Dr. Sheremet at alex@coastal.ufl.edu. Review of applications will begin December 14, 2011, and will continue until the position is filled. More information about ESSIE and the department can be found at www.essie.ufl.edu.
ESSIE is a hub where coastal, oceanographic, civil, and environmental faculty collaborate to address sustainability challenges. It offers a strong teaching and research environment committed to establishing a world-class coastal engineering and oceanography program. ESSIE includes the Departments of Civil and Coastal Engineering and Environmental Engineering Sciences, along with seven research centers and institutes, such as the Center for Environmental Policy, Howard T. Odum Center for Wetlands, and others.
ESSIE is investing in its new faculty, aiming for approximately 20% assistant professors by August 2013. It fosters collaboration across disciplines and offers ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research and teaching. The school emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship, with initiatives to train students in entrepreneurship and leadership. Faculty achievements include NSF CAREER awards and numerous recognitions for teaching and mentoring.
State-of-the-art facilities support research and teaching, including extensive laboratory spaces, specialized equipment like a 3-D X-ray Tomographic Unit, hurricane simulation test facilities, and access to advanced analytical instruments. These resources support interdisciplinary sustainability research and collaborations campus-wide.
The school offers ABET-accredited bachelor's degrees in civil and environmental engineering, with master's and doctoral programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering Sciences, and Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering. It has 43 faculty members, over 1,250 students across undergraduate and graduate levels, and approximately $34.7 million in research funding, supporting a significant portion of its students through grants and fellowships.
The College of Engineering, with over 270 faculty and a diverse student body, is ranked 15th among public engineering colleges in the US News and World Report. Gainesville, where the university is located, is recognized as one of the best places to live in America.
The University of Florida is an equal opportunity employer; minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
