This position is part of the Learning Spaces and Services department within the Student Success Division and has three primary areas of responsibility: supporting students and faculty through library instructional services, assisting patrons in person at the Ask Us desk and online, and helping foster student belonging through outreach work.
The University Library Specialist (ULS) is a core member of the Undergraduate Teaching, Learning, and Outreach team, which supports early-career undergraduate students through in-person and online instruction. The team introduces students to fundamental concepts in information literacy (e.g., recognizing academic information and finding and evaluating sources) and to the Libraries spaces, services, and resources critical to their academic success.
In this role, the ULS delivers in-person instruction and works closely with the Librarian for Undergraduate Teaching & Learning, who manages our in-person information literacy curriculum. This position serves a program coordinator role, communicating with faculty, staff, and constituents; scheduling over 200 library instruction sessions per year; and managing instructional spaces. In addition to teaching, the incumbent collaborates with colleagues in the maintenance and organization of instructional content, spaces, and materials. The ULS analyzes instructional trends and makes recommendations about program content and resource allocation. The ULS works closely with Libraries colleagues on working groups that advance teaching and learning in the Libraries.
Technologies and fluencies used in the position may include but are not limited to: Google Suite, or Microsoft Office with specific fluency in Sheets/Excel and Slides/Powerpoint, Canvas, Canva, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Drupal, and the Adobe Suite.
As a member of the Undergraduate Teaching, Learning, and Outreach team, this position represents the Libraries at occasional outreach events. These events provide an opportunity to introduce prospective and newly enrolled students to campus, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported in the Libraries. The position engages with students, helping them connect with key library resources that will be essential to their academic success.
The position also serves as an Ask Us Service Manager, the staff member responsible for public service operations during assigned shifts at one of the Libraries' primary Ask Us service points, including supervising student employees, making operational decisions, and providing virtual reference services. Additionally, the position collaborates with colleagues across the Student Success division to maintain consistently high-quality customer service. Observations from these interactions-particularly regarding areas where students struggle-help to inform ongoing curriculum development to better support undergraduate learning.
This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours and a hybrid work environment, based on departmental and operational needs. This position will have occasional responsibilities to cover Libraries events after normal business hours and on weekends.
