Job Description:
Under general supervision, functions as a supervisor of a shiftand/or complex specialized unit.
Responsibilities:
- Inspects police officers and security guards.
- Performs supervisory duties, such as assigning specific patrolresponsibilities, establishing priorities and evaluating workperformance; instructs, directs and guides the personnel on apatrol shift.
- Conducts investigations and prepares detailedcomputer-generated and verbal reports on a variety of incidentsincluding, but not limited to, criminal offenses, trafficaccidents, and personal injuries and missing persons.
- Carefully observes the activities and capabilities of personnelunder their supervision to ascertain whether or not police dutiesare promptly and efficiently performed. They shall report inwriting to their superior officer cases of misconduct,incompetence, neglect of duty or violations of the rules,regulations. Patrols campus to deter and detect criminal activity,identify hazards.
- At the end of the tour-of-duty, the shift supervisor shallconfer with the incoming supervisor.
- Enforces all University rules, regulations and State laws.
- A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall evaluate subordinates andencourage personnel to achieve maximum levels of efficiency.
- A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall relay orders to subordinatesand passes information up the chain-of-command to his/hersuperiors.
- A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor are accountable for the accuracy,legibility and thoroughness of all reports submitted by theirsubordinates.
- The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor are assigned specialized programassignments and ate responsible for program development and thetraining of police, staff and students about various campus safetyprograms.
- The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall conduct required daily rollcalls and inspection of their shift.
- The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall perform all other duties asassigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED, A.A. desirable.
- Except for qualifications established by law, additionalrelated experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance ofthe work of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.
- Two or more years law enforcement experience
- Highly Desirable: Training Certifications in Defensive Tactics,Firearms, Investigations by the Maryland Police Training Commissionin Defensive Tactics.
- Thorough knowledge of citizens rights and responsibilities; offederal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Skill in detecting situations imperiling public safety; inoperating emergency vehicles under all conditions; in the care anduse of firearms, self-defense tools and criminal detection devices;in communicating effectively both orally and in writing; inoperating two way radios and telephones in a variety ofenvironments; in conducting confidential investigations; inapplying knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt andeffective decisions for both routine and critical situations.
- Ability to show sensitivity in interactions with a diversepopulation; to maintain composure and demonstrate professionalismand restraint at all times; to perform extensive sitting, driving,standing, walking, climbing, and running; to lift, drag, and carryheavy objects; to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships; to follow oral and written directions; to provideguidance and training or supervision to others; to respond tosituations requiring physical stamina and force; to enter and exitvehicles frequently and quickly; to work in and wear personalprotective equipment.
Conditions of Employment:
- Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medicalinquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability toperform the job.
- Employees in this job class are required to maintaincertification as specified by the Maryland Police TrainingCommission.
- Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employmentand random drug testing.
- Certification as a police officer by the Maryland PoliceTraining Commission.
- Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’slicense.
