U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments at the time of offer based on operational needs, which may or may not align with candidates' first-choice preferences. Relocation may be required.

EARN UP TO $30,000 IN RECRUITMENT INCENTIVES

Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will be offered a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 will be paid upon successful completion of training at the Border Patrol Academy, and the remainder after completing a three-year service agreement. An additional $10,000 is available for agents accepting prioritized locations (Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ).

Applicants currently in pre-employment do not need to reapply to be eligible for the incentive.

CURRENT OR PRIOR LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE: Applicants with law enforcement experience may enter at higher grade levels (GL-9 to GS-11). Details below.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary varies by grade and location, with potential for up to 25% additional pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. Career ladder progression includes grades GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12, with eligibility for promotion after 52 weeks in each grade.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a BPA, you will help protect borders, deter illicit activity, and promote economic prosperity. Typical activities include:

  • Detecting, preventing, and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers near land borders using surveillance and other methods.
  • Responding to alarms, interpreting physical evidence, and conducting night operations with infrared scopes.
  • Engaging in anti-smuggling activities, patrols, and checks using various assets like vehicles, horses, watercraft, and off-road vehicles.

Travel may be required based on operational needs.

Qualifications

For GL-5: One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, stress management, learning ability, and information gathering OR a bachelor's degree or within nine months of graduation, with transcripts uploaded before the deadline OR a combination of experience and education.

For GL-7: One year of specialized work experience or a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or related graduate education, or a combination of experience and education.

For GL-9 and GS-11: One year of specialized experience performing law enforcement duties such as searches, apprehensions, investigations, and using surveillance technology.

There are no education substitutions for GS-9 and GS-11 levels.

Other Requirements

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen required.
  • Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age Restriction: Must be under 40 before referral, with exceptions for prior federal law enforcement or military service.
  • Veterans Preference: May be eligible for special appointments; age restriction may not apply.
  • Training: Six months at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, including language training in Spanish.
