Work schedule will be Full-time on the Day Shift, 8:00 am -4:30 pm.

Summary

Administrative/Secretarial support. Demonstrates courteous and professional behavior. Great customer service experience. Able to answer phone lines in a pleasing manner. Able to organize and compile data for various reports. Data entry skills required. Attention to detail. File and correlate correspondences. Answers all phone lines, sorts & distributes mail. Files for Nursing Service, make copies of various correspondence and reports. Order supplies. Interact with nursing staff, nursing managers, divisional directors and other nursing personnel. Interact with divisional secretaries on a daily basis. Will assist divisional secretaries and other nursing staff as needed. Other secretarial duties as needed. Environmental Duties and Responsibilities o Environmental of Care (EOC) and safety rounds routinely as designated on EOC round sheet and as needed. o Constantly active in keeping the work environment safe, neat, and clutter free. Takes action and/or notifies appropriate personnel of patient's room and work area when not hazard free. o Removal, tagging, bagging, and disposition of equipment to appropriate department, in need of repair, and follow through to resolution. o Reinforcement of safety precautions to patient/family. o Monitors and documents refrigerator temperature per Children’s of Alabama (COA) standard, reports issues and follows up with resolution. Communication o Communicates pleasantly, effectively and accurately with nurse partner, patients, parents, physicians, visitors, other employee team members and departments in a confidential manner regarding patient care and unit activities precautions to patient/family. o Provides assistance in directing concerns/questions to appropriate personnel in a courteous, approachable, and professional manner. o Communicates effectively with all patients, parents, visitors, physicians, nursing and ancillary staff; demonstrating professionalism including but not limited to: 1. Correct telephone etiquette 2. Relays messages promptly and accurately to appropriate personnel 3. Provides follow-up when applicable o Introduces self to patient and family and explains role and care that is being performed. o Cultivate and create positive supportive relationships with internal and external customers. Direct Patient Care o Assist with personal hygiene and elimination (i.e. bed bath, oral hygiene, bedside shampoos, empty foley and ostomy bags, occupied bed making). o Assist with ambulation, positioning, turning, activities of daily living, simple range of motion, and coughing and deep breathing. o Accurately obtains and correctly documents vital signs. Reports abnormal or significant changes in baseline vital signs to nurse immediately. Vital signs (height, weight. head circumference, and abdominal girth) are taken and recorded as per standard nursing procedure, unit policy and/or specifically instructed. o Intake and output accurately measured and recorded. o Urine is tested for glucose, acetone, blood, with specific gravity and recorded as instructed in indicated areas. o Assist with meals and/or nutritional snacks. o Perform non-invasive treatments/procedures such as cold application, application of external condom catheter, application of anti-embolism hose, oral / pharyngeal (only) suctioning, and other instructed activities. o Performs surgical preps as per standard nursing procedure. o Socialization and diversionary activities. o Application of electrodes and oxisensors for monitoring. o Initiation and performance of CPR. o Assist in care for body after death as per standard nursing procedure. o Hourly rounding as per COA and unit protocol. Indirect Patient Care o Assist with admitting, discharging, and transferring patients proactively. o Provides orientation of unit and surroundings to patients and family on each admission. o Transports patient safely as per operational procedure. o Collection of routine sputum, stool and urine specimens (excluding all sterile specimen collection). Delivers specimens to lab as requested. o Assembles necessary equipment, prepares patient and assist with physical exams. o Entry and retrieval of data from computers and posting of reports and information as indicated. o Answers pages and telephones. o Reinforce education to families about C.H.A.T. service each shift. o Collection of data for Performance Improvement (PI) as designated by licensed personnel. o Initiation, participation, and promotion in customer satisfaction initiatives. o Ensures accessibility to all equipment in storage and equipment rooms. o Cleaning of all poles and other assigned equipment. Responsiveness / Follow-Up o Data is entered accurately in real time to appropriate database and legibly on correct down time forms when appropriate. o Observe and report any changes in patient condition such as pain, behavior, skin breakdown, wound condition and other changes from baseline data to the licensed nurse. o Maintains an inventory of all unit level supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and accessibility to all levels of staff, including isolation, pantry, clean utility, and other designated equipment/supplies for optimal unit work flow. o Monitors and maintains stock for designated areas including isolation carts, pantry, clean utility cart, and other designated equipment for unit work flow. o Follow-up of issues to resolution within capabilities and elevate / communicate to assigned RN when applicable. Teamwork o Assuring orderliness and availability of supplies and equipment. o Take any concern seriously and seek resolution or understanding. Ask for help if the concern is beyond ability or scope of authority. Customer Service and Professionalism o Responsible for meeting customer needs in a positive, caring, and professional manner. o Ensures accuracy with patient supply charges. o Proactively APPROACH those who appear to need help and assist / direct them appropriately. o Remain calm when confronted with or responding to pressure situations. Mandatory and Education and Employment Qualifications o Keeps Children’s University module education up to date. o Complete (Competency Based Orientation) CBO within unit educator’s timeframe. o Maintains Health Screening per COA standard. o Remains up to date with mask fitting, BLS, and Restraint / Seclusion requirements. o Performance Manager tasks are submitted prior to expiration. o Review of COA policies and procedures. o Attend updates, in-services, and staff meetings as instructed per Director or institution. Safety o Maintain sharps container compliance per COA standards. o Assists in maintaining patient and family safety. o Participates in quality improvement activities. o Maintains safe environment. Flexibility o Perform other duties as assigned.

Other information

• One year of clerical experience required and familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
• Candidate must have at least one of the following:
• Six months of patient care experience within the last two years
• Enrolled in a medical related college programs and in clinical rotation
• CNA, CMA, PCT or EMT certification

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s of Alabama provides comprehensive evaluation and diagnostic treatment of a broad range of pediatric endocrine and diabetes disorders. This is a high volume, fast-paced clinic that features 30 clinical exam rooms, 6 triage bays, 2 stimulation testing rooms, 1 procedure room, and 3 classrooms to be able to accommodate a large volume of patients. The Endocrine Clinic is supported by 12 Endocrinologists, 6 Fellows, and 10 Nurse Practitioners. The Endocrine Clinic also has multiple areas of support staff including Diabetes Educators, Insulin Pump Educators, Clinic Nurses, Endocrine Nurses, Clinic Aides, and Secretarial staff.
