Job description

General Summary of Position

Responsible for providing secretarial support for all employees within an assigned nursing unit. Provides superior customer service to patients and visitors on a given unit.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  2. Communicates clearly by using customer-focused principles. Receives, greets, and directs patients, visitors, and hospital personnel. Receives and distributes mail, flowers, and various other items for patients on the unit.
  3. Assists physicians and nursing staff with clerical needs as required. Assists Department Director, Clinical Coordinator, and Charge Nurse as directed.
  4. Answers call system and delivers messages to appropriate staff members. Functions as a communication liaison during emergency situations, STAT requests/orders.
  5. Requests/advises Bed Board/Patient Care Supervisor of all admissions, transfers, discharges, and expirations. Faxes patient assignments and staffing information to staffing and ancillary departments.
  6. Places calls to relay orders for consults to appropriate physicians/clinicians. Logs calls into the 'consult log' (unit-specific log) and follows up to ensure messages are received and acted upon.
  7. Maintains adequate supplies and equipment inventory. Orders, maintains, and copies unit materials as needed.
  8. Initiates, assembles, and maintains physical and electronic copies of patient medical records. Faxes patient information to healthcare providers in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  9. Performs specialized tasks specific to each department by maintaining required skills.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Experience in medical clerical/medical receptionist position preferred.
  • Completion of nurse technician/medical assistant/medical clerical training preferred.
  • Or equivalent hospital experience preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $17.50 - $28.73.
