Job Description

The Unit Secretary (night shift) handles all incoming and outgoing communications and is responsible for accurately performing clerical duties for the clinical unit. This role processes physicians' orders, maintains unit charts, records, supplies and equipment, and assists in orienting and training new personnel. The Unit Secretary is the direct line of communication between the patient care unit and support services. The unit secretary reports to the Nurse Manager and works under indirect supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Handle all incoming and outgoing communications and perform clerical duties for the clinical unit.
  • Process physicians' orders and maintain unit charts, records, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist in orienting and training new personnel; serve as the direct line of communication between the patient care unit and support services.
Minimum Training and Education

A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Basic keyboarding skills required; medical terminology preferred. Applicant must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain current BLS through certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical And Mental Requirements
  • Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking (frequent).
  • Ability to climb stairs (infrequent); work indoors and from elevated areas (continuous/frequent).
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders (frequent).
  • Finger dexterity and full use of both legs and arms (continuous).
  • Ability to lift and carry 15 lbs (infrequent) and lift from floor/to height as specified (infrequent).
  • Vision/hearing requirements as described; ability to work in a latex-safe environment.
Additional Job Description

Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Work Experience: None. Certification: BLS required within 2 weeks of hire and maintained thereafter. Current AHA BLS or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
