Job Summary

This multi-functional role requires incumbents to be cross-trained to perform Unit Secretary duties as well as at least one other clinical support job, spending at least 20% of their time in each role. Cross-training may include roles such as Patient Care Technician, Nursing Specialty Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and/or Monitor Technician. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the incumbent provides excellent customer service while performing clerical and administrative duties, monitoring and stocking supplies, and maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Additional duties, under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, may include observing cardiac monitors, collecting patient data, performing basic nursing procedures, monitoring and documenting patient responses, assisting with treatments, and maintaining patient care equipment.

The specific job descriptions for CNA, NST, PCT, and Monitor Technician should be referenced for detailed responsibilities. The clinical support role should constitute at least 20% of the incumbent's time, though this may vary by unit.

Accountabilities

  • Customer Service: Respond to patients, families, and staff with kindness, courtesy, professionalism, and efficiency. Assist visitors, answer phones/intercoms, and participate in patient care rounding using AIDET.
  • Unit Operations: Manage ordering, stocking, and inventory of supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager, including monitoring supply levels and maintaining supply rooms.
  • Administrative/Clerical Support: Perform reception duties, respond to patient calls, and support unit administrative tasks such as data entry, meeting minutes, and bulletin boards.
  • Unit Safety/Environmental Rounds: Ensure a safe, clean, and functional environment, including cleaning equipment.
  • Clinical Support Duties: Perform duties specific to PCT/NST/CNA/Monitor Tech roles as outlined in respective job descriptions.

Supervisory/Management Responsibility

This is a non-management position reporting to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

If the role involves US/CNA, US/PCT, or US/NST, related coursework beyond high school is required. For US/Monitor Tech, a high school diploma or GED is preferred. At least 6 months of clerical or health-related experience is required for the US portion.

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses

Certifications such as CNA, EMT, Paramedic, Certified Surg Tech, or Medical Assistant are required for US/CNA, US/PCT, or US/NST roles. For US/Monitor Tech, no certification is required, but annual arrhythmia competencies must be validated.

In Lieu Of Minimum Requirements

Experience in healthcare or as an Administrative Assistant may be considered in lieu of formal training. For US/Monitor Tech, passing the Prisma Health arrhythmia exam can substitute for experience.

Other Skills and Experience

  • Successful completion of Prisma Health arrhythmia exam if US/Monitor Tech.
  • Telemetry training or experience is preferred for US/Monitor Tech.
  • Annual arrhythmia competencies must be maintained for US/Monitor Tech.
