Job Title: Unit Secretary – Emergency Department

Department: Emergency Services

Shift: Contingent: Hours Vary – Rotating Shifts

General Summary:
The Unit Secretary supports the daily operations of the Emergency Department by performing essential clerical and reception duties. This role serves as a key point of communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team. Responsibilities include managing patient records, entering orders, coordinating communication, and assisting with unit organization—all while upholding the Henry Ford Health System Team Member Standards of Excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Greet and assist patients, visitors, and staff in a courteous and professional manner.

Answer phones, route calls, and relay messages accurately and promptly.

Maintain and organize patient charts, including admissions, discharges, and transfers.

Enter orders and data into electronic health records and hospital systems.

Support communication and coordination during high-volume and emergency situations.

Maintain unit supplies and assist with scheduling and transport coordination.

Work closely with the clinical team to support efficient patient care.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a unit secretary preferred.
  • One year in healthcare setting such as medical office, hospital or laboratory.
