Unit Secretary - 7a-7p Day shift, rot wknd
General Summary of Position
This position performs secretarial, clerical, and receptionist support duties necessary for the operations of a patient care unit. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform general secretarial and clerical responsibilities.
- Answer calls promptly to meet patient needs.
- Notify the appropriate nursing staff accurately.
- Enter and coordinate computer data for all patients in the unit.
- Coordinate with other hospital departments (radiology, environmental services, laboratories, social services) to request and obtain supplies and services.
- Work with nursing staff to coordinate patient transfers within the unit or to other facilities.
- Serve as the unit's communication hub, answering calls, taking, and relaying messages.
- Address questions from visitors, physicians, or other departments in person or via phone.
- Greet and assist visitors and family members.
- Provide routine information about hospital and unit procedures.
- Maintain and update patient charts, including inserting forms, reports, and consults.
- Rearrange charts for discharged patients and copy charts for transfer patients prior to transfer.
- Complete requisitions and charge slips, obtaining necessary approvals.
- Access patient data for nursing and medical staff as needed.
- Keep the work area neat and organized.
- Assist in orienting new staff to the nursing station's functioning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of Crisis Prevention Intervention training within 6 months of hire required.
- Associate's degree preferred.
Experience
- 1 year 6 months of experience as a unit secretary, in registration, medical records, or related clerical work preferred.
- Experience in an acute care setting preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $17.50 - $28.73.
