$17.00/hr - $18.00/hr
Position Summary
Under the supervision and guidance of the Camp Director, the Unit Leader is responsible for the guidance and safety of the staff and children in the summer camp program. The Unit Leader supervises counselors and their programs, understands the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and assists counselors in implementation. The Unit Leader acts as a role model and mentor to staff and counselors.
Essential Functions
- Ensure all health and safety guidelines are strictly adhered to.
- Assist Camp Director in maintaining YMCA camping standards.
- Supervise all counselors in the unit, evaluate staff regularly, and act as a liaison between counselors and the Camp Director.
- Provide a positive role model for staff and campers, and work with counselors to plan enjoyable activities.
- Be aware of emergency procedures, report accidents/incidents promptly, and fill out accident forms.
- Maintain positive relationships with parents, greet them during arrivals and dismissals, and address concerns professionally.
- Approve daily activity sheets submitted by counselors, ensuring they meet safety, age appropriateness, and core values.
- Manage safety, attendance, and act as YMCA representative during field trips.
- Handle petty cash receipts and reimbursements.
- Assume responsibilities of the Camp in the Assistant Camp Director’s absence.
- Assist with camper issues and discipline children following positive discipline guidelines.
- Adhere to YMCA house rules and attend meetings and trainings.
- Manage transportation of camper lunches.
- Follow weekly camp schedules, maintain staff and camper morale, and complete timesheets daily.
- Administer first aid and supervise children's hygiene, model healthy habits, and participate in daily physical activities.
- Participate in family nights and ensure all campers and counselors have fun with smiles.
Requirements
- Excellent decision-making, role modeling, and communication skills.
- Positive attitude, enthusiasm, and leadership ability in a team setting.
- At least 21 years old.
- Experience with children in camp, childcare, or related settings.
- One year of staff supervision and leadership experience.
- Understanding and embodiment of core values: honesty, respect, caring, responsibility.
- Skills in motivation, storytelling, games, athletics, crafts, and songs.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Walking, standing, sitting, running, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, swimming, outdoor weather tolerance, and travel via bus to trip locations.
