Job description

UPMC Hamot, a Magnet designated facility in Erie, PA, is hiring a Unit Director for the Main Operating Room!

The Unit Director of the Main OR has 24/7 accountability for a 17-room OR. We perform a variety of surgical procedures including general surgery, robotics, orthopedics, neurosurgery, trauma, renal transplants, and more. The individual will collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, RNs, surgical technologists, and other professionals. We seek someone with strong communication skills, organizational ability, and a drive to ensure a safe and efficient surgical environment.

This position is Monday-Friday (6 am-2:30 pm), with on-call hours.

Support includes:

Sign-On Bonus Details (Full-Time):
• $15,000 sign-on bonus for nurses with over one year of experience

  • Up to five and a half weeks of paid time off annually, plus seven paid holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement up to $6,000 per academic year at any accredited institution, available to employees and dependents (including discounts and no-cost RN-BSN/MSN options for UPMC employees)

Salary and title will be based on education and experience.

Overview: The Unit Director leads and manages their area 24/7 to ensure excellent patient and staff experiences. Responsibilities include improving care quality, fostering a healthy workplace, overseeing clinical and administrative functions, collaborating on patient outcomes, supporting shared governance, implementing safety improvements, and promoting staff growth. They also handle staff recruitment, orientation, performance management, and budget oversight.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with medical staff on outcomes, quality priorities, and safety initiatives; monitor quality indicators and develop action plans.
  • Apply evidence-based practices to improve clinical care and share successes system-wide.
  • Analyze satisfaction data, develop responsive actions, and involve staff in quality improvement.
  • Build relationships through mentoring and positive communication; manage conflict and foster trust.
  • Plan work schedules promoting safety and work-life balance; communicate effectively across media.
  • Coach on diversity, address workplace violence, promote inclusivity, and develop shared visions using data and stakeholder input.
  • Lead change, support staff through transitions, and adapt interpersonal styles as needed.
  • Participate in professional organizations and promote patient-centered care within the Relationship-Based Care framework.
  • Ensure nursing practice meets standards, applying best practices to foster excellence.
  • Encourage collaboration, align priorities, and manage resources responsibly.
  • Support staff development, orientation, and continuing education; create an environment conducive to learning.
  • Recruit nursing students, support shared governance, and develop staff into leaders and mentors.
