Job summary

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated, doing business as JLL, is seeking an Operating Engineer in Detroit for on-site facilities management. The role focuses on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing building systems across electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and controls, with multi-skill capability across crafts.

Ideal candidates have 3–5 years’ experience in building maintenance or facilities engineering, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and documentation.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or technical degree in building systems, engineering, or related field preferred.
• Experience: 3–5 years of experience in building maintenance, facilities management, or engineering.
• Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems; experience with building automation systems preferred.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex building system issues efficiently.
• Attention to Detail: Accurate documentation of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, HVAC, and other building systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of building equipment and systems.
• Respond promptly to service requests, emergencies, and system malfunctions to minimize downtime and disruption.
• Monitor and adjust building automation systems, including temperature, lighting, and energy management controls.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and service providers for repairs, installations, and inspections.
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs, records of repairs, and compliance documentation.
• Ensure all building systems comply with safety codes, regulatory requirements, and environmental standards.
• Assist with renovation, construction, or retrofit projects as needed.
• Monitor building security systems, elevators, fire alarms, and other safety equipment.
• Support sustainability initiatives, energy conservation, and cost-saving measures across building operations.

What this job involves – The Operating Engineer will have a strong focus on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing facility equipment on all systems. Individuals are expected to demonstrate technical expertise in one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations) and be multi-skilled in others in order to successfully complete daily/weekly work assignments.
