Job description

Since the late 1800's, the Transtar companies consist of a group of rail carriers that have been an important component in this country's industrial development. They move billions of tons of raw materials to manufacturing sites, transport finished products to market, and store and handle bulk commodities, providing rail transport services to hundreds of satisfied customers throughout the nation's industrial heartland.

The Car Repairer is an entry-level maintenance position at Transtar’s Union Railroad Company located in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. The Car Repair Department is responsible for the building, rebuilding, repairing, and rerailing of railroad cars.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain all types of railroad cars.
  • Replace wheels, draft gears, and safety appliances.
  • Test airbrake systems.
  • Re-rail cars and locomotives.
  • Adjust and bind loads.
  • Clean, prepare, and paint cars.
  • Use various hand, electric, and pneumatic power tools.
  • Use burning torch and equipment.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • A minimum of one year of outdoor work experience is required.
  • Mechanical aptitude is required.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Trade school training is preferred.
  • Two years of welding, burning, and fabricating experience, preferably in an industrial environment, is preferred.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Full-time position, working shifts (with various off days), overtime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays.
  • Adherence to safety procedures and guidelines at all times. Safety is our core value, which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and boots with metatarsal protection.
  • The position requires punctuality, consistent attendance, self-direction, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment for the success of the operations.
  • Must pass assessment test(s).
