Requisition 38324: Union Machinist (Diesel Engine Mechanic) (Decatur, IL 2025)

Job Description

Inspect, service, repair, and maintain diesel locomotives.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Perform daily and periodic inspections, servicing, and maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives, including scheduled and preventative maintenance as per company policy and federal regulations.
  2. Fuel, check, and change oil and liquid levels; replace filters for engine air, air compressor, fuel, and lube oil.
  3. Replace and maintain engine components, traction motors, generators, air compressors, wheels, and truck components.
  4. Troubleshoot and diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make necessary repairs.
  5. Disassemble, repair, replace, rebuild, re-assemble, install, adjust, align, and lubricate mechanical equipment.
Job Requirements
  1. Work safely to prevent accidents and injuries.
  2. Wear protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses.
  3. Complete annual safety training and pass safety rules examinations.
  4. May require random drug and alcohol testing.
  5. Pass all required assessments and a post-offer medical examination, including a drug screen.
  6. This position requires union membership as per the union agreement.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Preferred: One-year mechanical experience, experience reading technical drawings, two years diesel mechanic experience, completion of vocational or trade school.

Training

Travel to McDonough, GA for paid training including 1 week of Mechanical Safety Orientation and 6 weeks of craft-specific training. Norfolk Southern will reimburse travel and lodging expenses as per union agreement.

Compensation Data

Rate of Pay

  • First 40 days: 50% of full rate
  • Next 204 days: 75% of full rate
  • Next 244 days: 80% of full rate
  • After 2 years: $41.02 (full journeyman rate)

Work Conditions
