Job Overview
The Underwriting Director drives the underwriting group and business results within the Midwestern region of the company’s Global Technology Practice. The role is accountable for profitability, business development, and operating excellence of a book of business in technology coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Directs work activities and holds full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff.
- Onboards, trains, coaches, leads, and develops underwriters and supports the development of underwriting training.
- Participates with senior management in the development and implementation of underwriting policy, marketing, and business strategy.
- Reviews and approves referrals within authority and drives regional initiatives and strategies.
- Ensures adherence to underwriting policy, pricing, documentation, and referral standards, and conducts file reviews to improve underwriting quality.
- Markets products and services through agencies or broker communities and maintains profitable agency and, where applicable, broker relationships.
- Reports business progress to senior management and keeps current on state/territory issues, regulations, industry activity, and trends.
- May represent the company in industry trade groups.
Required Skills and Experience
- Effective leadership, coaching, and development of an underwriting group.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to interact with all levels of internal and external business partners.
- Senior‑level technical and business management acumen with underwriting skill and knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and teams.
- Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues, and to creatively resolve unique business problems.
- Proactive long‑term view of business goals and objectives, achieving results with a proactive approach.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related business software.
- Education: MBA or equivalent experience; professional designations preferred.
- Minimum ten years of underwriting experience with a proven track record of results.
Compensation
National base pay range: $97,000 to $189,000 annually, depending on experience, skills, certifications, and location.
