Job Title: Underwriting Manager

Job Description:

Leads and directs an underwriting group, accountable for business results through management, profitability, and business development of a book of business. Works within the highest limits of authority in conjunction with senior management. Has regional, industry segment, or company-wide scope of responsibility.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Directs work activities and manages performance and development of subordinate staff according to corporate strategic direction.
• Coaches, leads, and develops underwriters; directs underwriting training development.
• Participates with senior management in developing and implementing underwriting policy, marketing, and business strategy.
• Develops and implements operational plans to enhance business and meet strategic objectives.
• Reviews and directs underwriting policy application and risk pricing within assigned book of business.
• Markets products and services through agencies or brokerage community.
• Develops and maintains agency/broker relationships for positive and profitable outcomes.
• Reports business progress to senior management.
• Keeps current on industry trends, regulations, and issues; may represent the company in trade groups.

Reporting Relationship: AVP or above

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Effective leadership, coaching, and development of underwriting teams.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
• Senior-level technical knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; capable of managing multiple projects.
• Ability to handle ambiguous situations and resolve unique business challenges.
• Proactive with a long-term strategic view.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and related software.

Education and Experience:

• MBA or equivalent experience; professional designations preferred.
• Minimum of ten years underwriting experience with proven results.
