Job summary

Relm Insurance seeks an experienced Underwriting Counsel to join its Legal team and act as a key legal partner to Relm’s underwriting business. You will manage day-to-day legal support for underwriting teams, drafting endorsements, manuscript wordings, and policy forms.

You will collaborate with underwriters, claims, product teams and senior stakeholders to translate commercial objectives into precise policy language and ensure regulatory compliance across the portfolio.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and US bar admission.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience in insurance/underwriting.
• Strong experience with commercial/specialty lines insurance products.
• Experience drafting policies, endorsements and bespoke coverage solutions.
• Experience translating underwriting intent into practical policy language.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Act as primary day-to-day legal adviser to underwriting teams on policy wording, coverage and related matters.
• Own and manage the Underwriting Counsel intake process and prioritize requests.
• Draft and review endorsements, manuscript wordings, policy forms and documents.
• Advise on bespoke policy terms and coverage structures translating underwriting goals.
• Review and negotiate NDAs and underwriting-related agreements.
• Partner with Underwriting and Product to develop and lifecycle-manage insurance products.
• Advise on regulatory requirements relevant to underwriting activities and policy docs.
• Collaborate with Claims and Legal to translate lessons from claims into better wording.
• Develop policy wording standards, playbooks and precedents with underwriting.
• Identify regulatory and market developments and provide practical recommendations.
• Develop and deliver training on policy wording and regulatory developments.
