Job summary

Relm Insurance Ltd. in New York seeks an experienced Underwriting Counsel to join its Legal team and become a key legal partner to the underwriting business.

You will manage day-to-day legal support for underwriters, with responsibility for endorsements, amendments and bespoke policy wordings across Relm’s specialty portfolio. Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel – Insurance & Strategy, you will draft, review, and negotiate policy language, advise on regulatory requirements, and collaborate

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction in good standing.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience in insurance coverage, underwriting counselling or in-house insurance team.
• Experience drafting endorsements, manuscript language and bespoke coverage solutions.
• Experience working directly with underwriters and translating objectives into policy language.

Responsibilities

• Act as primary day-to-day legal adviser to underwriting teams on policy wording and coverage.
• Own and manage the Underwriting Counsel intake process with prioritisation of requests.
• Draft and review endorsements, amendatories, manuscript wordings and policy forms.
• Advise on bespoke policy terms and translate commercial objectives into policy language.
• Review and negotiate NDAs and underwriting-related agreements; collaborate with product.
• Provide regulatory guidance relevant to underwriting activities and policy documentation.
• Develop policy wording standards, playbooks and precedents; support product library updates.
• Identify and translate market developments into practical recommendations.
• Deliver training to underwriting teams on policy wording and regulatory changes.
• Improve Underwriting Counsel processes for timely, commercial legal support.
