Job summary

Verus Specialty Insurance, a member of W.R. Berkley Corporation, is seeking an Underwriting Assistant to support Excess & Surplus lines, including general, garage and professional liability.

This in-office role provides clerical and analytical help to underwriters through the full policy life cycle from pre-submission to renewal. You will identify issues, evaluate exposures, assist with endorsements and premiums, follow underwriting guidelines, and maintain strong relationships with

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework preferred.
  • Experience with Professional Liability or Commercial Casualty is a plus.
  • Strong oral/written communication and positive attitude.
  • Ability to document written referrals clearly for others to interpret.
  • Detail-oriented with initiative in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Support underwriting life cycle from pre-submission through policy issuance and renewal.
  • Identify issues and use resources to assist underwriters.
  • Evaluate exposures and endorsements.
  • Assist with issuance of endorsements and premiums.
  • Follow underwriting guidelines and SLAs.
  • Coordinate with underwriters and brokers on outstanding information.
  • Support day-to-day transactions for underwriting teams and partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with underwriters, customers and partners.
  • Demonstrate urgency to meet customer needs.
  • Quote accounts within authority by reviewing exposures and rates.
  • Review inspection reports and refer issues to underwriters.

Responsibilities

The Underwriting Assistant supports our Excess & Surplus lines book of general/excess liability, garage and professional liability business. The Underwriting Assistant (UA) is responsible for providing Underwriters with technical and clerical support with the information necessary to make prudent underwriting decisions on new business, renewals and endorsements. The UA supports the underwriting life cycle from pre- submission through policy issuance and renewal.

  • Identifying key issues in the decision-making process with the guidance from the underwriter.
  • Identifying and use of appropriate resources that assist in the analytical process; this includes making formal recommendations to underwriters on account management needs.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate exposures for each risk.
  • Perform analysis utilizing appropriate information to consider endorsement/account acceptability.
  • Issuance of premium and non-premium bearing endorsements.
  • Demonstrates adherence to guidelines which include, Underwriting Guidelines and Service Level Agreements.
  • Ability to follow-up with underwriters and brokers on outstanding information.
  • Supports day-to-day transactions that support multiple underwriting team members and customers/agency partners.
  • Develop, maintain and nurture positive working relationships with underwriters, customers, and other business partners to provide an enhanced customer experience (i.e., researches and resolves issues, responds to inquiries and questions).
  • Display a strong sense of urgency, recognizing customer needs.
  • Ability to apply judgement and present negotiation on more complex accounts and processes.
  • Quotes accounts within authority limits by reviewing exposures and experience rating, updating account information, rates and adjusts the price.
  • Examines inspection reports, prior audits, and endorsements, and refer any issues to underwriters.
  • Ability to effectively manage and balance multiple demands.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college course work or degree preferred.
  • Experience with Professional Liability or Commercial Casualty coverages is a plus.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills, displaying a positive attitude.
  • Ability to provide written referrals where thought process is well documented and easily interpreted by others.
  • Detail-oriented with initiative and ability to work in fast-paced team environment.
  • A strong focus and passion for delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • High sense of urgency and ability to function well in a high-volume and time sensitive environment.
  • Computer literate including use of Word, Excel and various project management tools.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full-time regular employees which for this role includes: Base Salary Range: $55,000 - $62,000 The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program. Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, Wellness, Paid Time Off, 401(k) and Profit-Sharing plans.
