Job summary

Verus Specialty Insurance, a member of the W.R. Berkley Corporation, is seeking a Renewal Underwriter to assess and underwrite risks within a book of business.

You will work under broad supervision, maintaining strong broker relationships and applying underwriting guidelines to qualify risk acceptability. Responsibilities include negotiating coverage, meeting production metrics, and delivering excellent client service while traveling as needed.

Qualifications

  • College degree or equivalent work experience in the insurance industry; designations are a plus.

Responsibilities

Under broad supervision, the Renewal Undewriter will be responsible for underwriting risks in a book of business. Works within limited authority on assignments utilizing underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations.

  • Skill and knowledge of broker/agency management and relationship building.
  • Expected to maintain and develop broker relationships.
  • Track record of uncovering, researching and putting together new product line opportunities by applying appropriate underwriting strategies and standards to qualify risk acceptability.
  • Ability to work effectively and within an assigned level of underwriting authority.
  • Experience planning, orchestrating, and leading highly effective broker meetings.
  • Negotiates standard coverage issues, closes sale, and gauges customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to meet or exceed designated LOB production metrics.
  • Strong technical knowledge regarding underwriting, coverage and pricing within a particular product line.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong productive relationships with individual brokers.
  • Provide timely, courteous and efficient service to all internal and external clients.
  • Ability to identify and call appropriate attention to broker performance issues.
  • Understanding of pricing and risk selection criteria.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • College degree or equivalent work experience with demonstrated involvement in insurance industry education. Insurance designations are a plus.
  • Unsupported excess experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of and contacts within the wholesale agency distribution system strongly preferred.
  • Resourceful, analytical, with the ability to execute tasks through to resolution.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills with a positive attitude.
  • Detail-oriented with initiative and ability to work in fast-paced team environment.
  • A focus on delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • High sense of urgency and need to identify and resolve issues.
  • Ability to travel, as needed.
  • Computer literate including use of Word, Excel and various project management tools.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full-time regular employees which for this role includes: Base Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000 The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program. Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, Wellness, Paid Time Off, 401(k) and Profit-Sharing plans.
