Role Contribution

This role is pivotal in shaping the future of our North America Surety Reinsurance portfolio. You will select and monitor the profitability of cedents, ensuring decisions drive AXIS towards greater financial strength. Collaborating with the Head of the department, you'll underwrite, price, and facilitate treaty bookings, impacting our operations directly.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Combine economic, construction, and service industry knowledge with credit analysis to evaluate a cedent’s surety portfolio.
  2. Review reinsurance contract treaty wording for adherence to standards, consult legal, and negotiate with brokers and clients.
  3. Perform annual underwriting file audits, review credit files, and analyze risk selection.
  4. Assess overall portfolio and generate reports on findings and trends.
  5. Collaborate with actuaries to set treaty pricing relative to risk profiles.
  6. Create underwriting rationales for treaty participation levels based on data and risk characteristics.
  7. Prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment, especially during peak seasons.
  8. Verify treaty details, pricing, and terms after renewals with underwriting assistants.
Candidate Profile

Minimum Requirements
  • 5+ years of primary surety underwriting experience in contract or commercial surety.
  • Advanced financial and credit analysis skills, with excellent communication abilities.
  • Strong negotiation skills to achieve mutually acceptable outcomes.
  • Understanding of accounting, cash flow analysis, and construction management controls.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, especially in negotiations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of surety claims practices.
  • Experience in surety reinsurance, trade credit, or political risk underwriting.
Role Factors

Travel extensively and work in-office 3 days a week.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range is approximately $175k-$215k in NY, with additional incentives and a comprehensive benefits package including health, retirement, tuition reimbursement, and paid time off.
