Base pay range

$68,000.00/yr - $85,000.00/yr

**This is a remote role with occasional travel - candidates MUST be located in SD, MN, IA, NE, KS, MO, WI, OH, CO, UT, NV, or IL**

They are seeking an Underwriter II to join their growing workers' compensation underwriting team.

About the Role

The Underwriter II plays a key role in evaluating risk, analyzing profitability, and managing a book of business in alignment with the company’s growth and underwriting strategy. This position works closely with Business Development, Loss Control, and Claims teams to deliver a unified customer experience. The ideal candidate will bring strong underwriting fundamentals, data-driven decision-making, and comfort interacting with agency partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate submitted business and determine acceptability, pricing, and terms in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority
  • Analyze class codes, modifiers, exposures, and trends to ensure profitability
  • Leverage predictive analytics and internal tools to evaluate small deductible programs and overall book performance
  • Collaborate with Business Development on agency performance reviews, account planning, and portfolio management
  • Work with agents, brokers, and policyholders to negotiate policy terms, communicate service plans, and ensure mutual understanding of underwriting decisions
  • Partner with Loss Control and Claims to develop service strategies that support underwriting goals
  • Participate in external meetings and presentations with agency partners and clients
  • Perform agency visits and marketing activities to promote the carrier’s value proposition and competitive differentiation
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, state regulations, and bureau guidelines (NCCI and others)
  • Provide feedback on underwriting systems and workflows and participate in testing and improvement initiatives

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of commercial underwriting or similar experience in P&C insurance
  • 3+ years underwriting worker's compensation accounts, with strong understanding of workers' compensation rating, class codes, modifiers, and regulatory guidelines
  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree in business or related field preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel (intermediate to advanced), Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills (including rate, ratio, and percentage calculations)
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Effective time management and prioritization in a high-volume environment
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel up to 20%
