Job summary

Reliance Matrix in Philadelphia, PA seeks an Underwriter II to independently evaluate and synthesize information to accept, modify, or reject risks on a case. This role requires discretion in final risk decisions across group lines, including plan design, experience, and manual rates.

You will collaborate with sales, service, contracts, claims, and compliance to price and renew business, mentor trainees, and lead efficiency projects while maintaining strong client relationships.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three to five years of underwriting experience required.
  • Working knowledge of group products for all lines of coverage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make decisions concerning the acceptability of Group Risks with moderate supervision.
  • Strong mathematical skills and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to perform detailed and diversified duties including prioritization of high volume/deadline workload.
  • High level of customer service orientation.
  • Ability to research and solve problems with moderate supervision.
  • Proficient in negotiation skills with both internal and external customers.
  • Demonstration of project management skills in management of book of business.
  • Proficient with Excel, Power Point, and other Microsoft office applications.

Job description

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

Independently evaluates and synthesizes information in order to accept, modify, or rejects risks on a case. Has the ability to exercise independence and discretion in making final decision making of risk accepted/rejected. Book of business and new business quote activity is comprised of both experience and manually rated cases. Utilizes experience in the industry, understanding of the client and marketplace to review and evaluate all assigned risks in the Group lines of business that includes plan design, experience, manual rates and provides guidance to sales, service, and all internal business partners to price and renew all business lines. The overall final case position is determined by the Underwriter II. Has a thorough understanding of our manual rating approach, including base rates and factors that drive claims cost changes. Understands PACS and evaluates inforce business for cross sell, enrollment, plan design changes and other NBOC (New Business Old Case) situations to help generate additional revenue. These factors are utilized in the final position on a case. Displays strong understanding of our experience rating methodology and is beginning to understand factors that contribute to aggressive or conservative formula rates and utilizes those in evaluation for overall case position. Independently determines. Evaluates coverage amounts, premium rates and experience rates on new and inforce business, which includes new business submissions, amendments to in-force plans and renewals exercising independent judgment. Develops and maintains a strong relationship with sales and service partners in the field. Following analysis and evaluation articulates final decision rationale on case pricing. Identifies and communicates to management product risk in a way that is easily understood. Knowledge of both pre-sale and renewal underwriting and can complete complex tasks on both independently. Effectively collaborates with colleagues in various functions (contracts, claims, compliance) to reach decisions favorable for RSL that are included in the sold case which was finalized by the Underwriter II. Identifies and communicates to management product and systems enhancements for the betterment and continuous improvement of the Underwriting department. Leads projects that focus on increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the underwriting function. These projects will focus on creating more efficient operations leading to overall more enhanced positions being produced. (Typical 15% of time) Trains underwriting staff on underwriting guidelines and principles. Mentors Underwriting Trainees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Related Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

The expected hiring range for this position is $68,640.00 - $85,800.00 annually for work performed in the primary location (Philadelphia, PA).

This expected hiring range covers only base pay and excludes any other compensation components such as commissions or incentive awards.

The successful candidate’s starting base pay will be based on several factors including work location, job-related skills, experience, qualifications, and market conditions.

These ranges may be modified in the future.

Work location may be flexible if approved by the Company.
