Job description

Position Summary

The Underwriter I supports commercial lending and Credit Administration by analyzing borrower and guarantor financial information, evaluating credit risk, preparing credit presentations, and monitoring assigned commercial relationships. The position independently underwrites routine C&I, CRE, and other business credits within assigned size, risk, and complexity parameters and provides well-supported recommendations regarding repayment capacity, loan structure, collateral, guarantor support, risk ratings, and policy compliance.

The Underwriter I works closely with lenders, Loan Servicing, and the Chief Credit Officer to maintain complete, examination-ready credit files. More complex, higher-risk, or unusual credits are completed with guidance or review from senior credit personnel. The position does not independently approve loans, establish final risk ratings, waive policy requirements, or authorize policy exceptions unless authority is separately granted under the Bank’s Lending Authority and Approval Matrix.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Underwrite new, renewed, modified, and extended commercial credits within assigned size, risk and complexity parameters.
  • Collect, spread, verify, and analyze borrower and guarantor information, including financial statements, tax returns, personal financial statements, rent rolls, debt schedules, aging reports, and related documents.
  • Prepare business and global cash flow analyses and evaluate debt service coverage, leverage, liquidity, profitability, financial trends, repayment sources, collateral, guarantor support, industry conditions, and the borrower’s overall financial condition.
  • Prepare concise, complete credit memoranda, annual reviews, deal concept materials, and other approval documentation with clear conclusions and recommendations.
  • Identify key credit risks, adverse trends, covenant concerns, policy exceptions, and other material issues; document mitigating factors and recommend appropriate action.
  • Evaluate and recommend loan amount, term, amortization, collateral, guaranties, covenants, reporting requirements, and other structural conditions.
  • Perform documented risk-rating analysis and recommendations consistent with Bank policy, underwriting standards/procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Complete assigned annual reviews, renewals, interim monitoring, borrowing-base reviews, covenant tracking, financial reporting follow-up, and collateral or documentation monitoring.
  • Identify deterioration or emerging weaknesses and promptly elevate material concerns to management.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, confidential, and examination-ready credit files and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with criticized/classified credit reviews, portfolio and concentration monitoring, credit reporting, loan review responses, process improvement, cross-training, and special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Two or more years of experience in credit analysis, commercial lending, accounting, audit, finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze business and personal financial statements, tax returns, global cash flow, debt service coverage, collateral, guarantor support, and related credit information.
  • Working knowledge of commercial lending, loan structure, credit risk, collateral analysis, risk ratings, loan policy, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and well-supported analyses and recommendations for routine commercial credits while appropriately escalating complex or higher-risk matters.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to use Bank credit, financial spreading, and loan systems effectively.
  • Strong analytical judgment, credit writing, communication, organization, accuracy, confidentiality, collaboration, adaptability, time management, and commitment to ethical conduct and compliance.
General and Physical Requirements

Perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation; remain in a stationary position and use standard office equipment for extended periods; communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and electronically; occasionally lift and carry up to 10 pounds, travel to Bank or offsite locations, and work outside normal business hours based on business needs.
