Overview

Job title: Underwriter Associate
Company: Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield
Location: Remote in Arkansas, United States
Education: Bachelor Degree preferred; High School Diploma or equivalent required (in lieu of degree, five years of non-clerical healthcare industry experience considered). This position is remote and limited to applicants in the following states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluates health risk and establishes profitable and competitive rating levels to ensure acquisition and retention of business while mitigating risk.
  • Fields inquiries from sales staff, agents, and brokers for new and renewal business and other related issues.
  • Maintains appropriate records for monitoring the effectiveness of underwriting practices and procedures for review and audit by regulatory authorities.
  • Maintains strict compliance with Federal and State regulations for group insurance with respect to rating, risk assessment, medical underwriting and portability.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Prepares rates using the rating and actuarial systems for new business and renewal activity and consistently applies all underwriting guidelines, practices and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in Business, Math, Finance, Accounting, Statistics, Economics, Health Administration, Informatics, Health Information or related field. In lieu of degree, five (5) years of non-clerical healthcare industry experience will be considered.
  • Licensing/Certification: Arkansas state Health/Life insurance license required within 6 months of date of hire. Training through industry courses and seminars (e.g., HIAA, FLMI, CHC, CEBS) preferred. Knowledge of medical risks, conditions, treatments, pharmacology, and medical terminology preferred.
  • Essential Skills & Abilities: Mathematical, Analytical, Problem/Situation Analysis, Decision-Making, Detail-Oriented, Excellent communication & interpersonal skills, Excellent computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office; strong written and verbal communication; project management and research skills.
