Job summary

Resound Credit Union in Franklin, TN is seeking a full-time Underwriter to evaluate loan documents and make sound credit decisions in line with policy and regulatory requirements.

This role requires attention to detail, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while protecting member information.

Experience in consumer lending and computer skills are required; a high school diploma is required and a bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Examine and verify accuracy of loan applications.
  • Review employment records, income statements, tax returns and credit reports to assess risk.
  • Assess debt-to-income against lending standards.
  • Calculate and verify collateral values.
  • Make sound lending decisions within policies and laws.
  • Assist staff with cross-selling of credit union products and services.
  • Underwrite and approve loans within authorized limits; stay compliant with laws and regs.
  • Maintain communication with branches on loan status and updates.
  • Protect member information and ensure confidentiality.
  • Follow Loan Officer Agreement and stay informed on rates and promotions.
  • Assist with online loan applications and funding.
  • Attend training and department meetings; perform other duties as directed.

IS THIS POSITION FOR YOU?

As an Underwriter, you will evaluate and analyze loan documents in order to make sound decisions on consumer loan requests. Underwrites loans based on established RCU loan policy guidelines and federal and state laws and regulations. Works toward the overall credit union goal of providing superior service to all members and dealer partners.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Examines and verifies accuracy of loan applications.
  • Reviews and verifies employment records, income statements, tax returns, credit reports, and other financial documents to assess risk of extending credit.
  • Assesses whether debt-to-income ratio meets credit union lending standards.
  • Calculates and verifies value of collateral offered.
  • Uses sound judgement in decision making throughout the loan approval or denial process.
  • Assists staff with recognizing cross-selling opportunities of credit union products and services
  • Underwrites and approves loans, within authorized limits, based on credit union policies, procedures, and guidelines. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of and follows all federal and state consumer lending laws and regulations including and not limited to the guidelines of the Patriot Act (MIP), the Bank Secrecy Act, Anti-Money Laundering, Bank Bribery Act, NCUA Privacy Regulations, Reg. B, Reg. Z, Reg. DD, Reg. E, Reg. CC, Service Members Civil Relief, and FCRA/FACTA.
  • Makes alternative recommendations, within guidelines, to creditworthy members not qualified for loan requested.
  • Maintains communication with branch staff regarding loan application status and updates as necessary.
  • Promotes and maintains confidential environment to protect member information.
  • Ensures adverse action letters are completed and properly documented within loan guidelines and policies.
  • Abides by the written, signed Loan Officer Agreement.
  • Stays informed and knowledgeable of all credit union rates, fees, products, services, and promotions to assist members with meeting their financial needs. Provides members opportunity to purchase payment protection and GAP insurance.
  • Assists branch offices with online loan applications including documentation and funding.
  • Attends required training and department meetings as directed by management.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
Job Specifications
Education

High School diploma or GED is required. A bachelor's degree in business or related field is preferred. Three years of practical experience may be accepted in place of degree.

Experience

Three year's previous financial institution experience preferred. Consumer lending experience and computer skills are required.

Physical, mental and visual requirements

Many of the duties of this position are performed while seated for extended periods of time. This position does require the ability to move freely from one area of the building to another. Excellent manual dexterity, visual, audio, and verbal communication skills are needed. This position requires the ability to function in an environment of occasional high stress. Can work in a fast-paced environment and be extremely detailed with excellent time management skills.

Personal Qualifications

A caring, sincere, positive attitude is required for this position. Effective communication skills and excellent customer service skills are required. Must be organized and detail oriented with good time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet tight schedules. Must possess analytical thinking skills and demonstrate flexibility to apply lending criteria on case-by-case basis. Leadership, company loyalty, and dependability should be demonstrated in this position. Must be able to function as a team player and cooperate with co-workers, members, and business associates. Must be able to retain credit union policies and procedures as well as federal and state lending laws and regulations.
