Job description

Xtreme Sonar is seeking an undersea acoustics engineer to join our advanced underwater systems team. This role is focused on designing, implementing, and deploying cutting‑edge sonar and underwater communication solutions in real‑world environments. The ideal candidate combines deep domain expertise in acoustics with hands‑on hardware and software development experience, and a track record of delivering production‑ready systems. Preference is given to candidates with an electrical engineering background and related skill sets.

What you’ll do
  • Lead design and development of underwater acoustic systems, including sonar, hydrophones, transducers, and acoustic communication components.
  • Apply and extend sonar theory (propagation, array processing, the sonar equation) to real‑world deployments and field trials.
  • Build and optimize end‑to‑end hardware/software stacks
  • Conduct system integration, testing, and field deployments in real conditions; demonstrate a track record of turning models into working, reliable systems.
  • Drive scale‑to‑production activities: cost‑down iterations, design for manufacturability (DFM/DFT), supplier selection, manufacturing documentation, calibration procedures, and automated test fixtures.
  • Improve yield, reliability, and maintainability through robust engineering practices and documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including electrical, mechanical, software, and operations to deliver integrated solutions.
What you bring
  • 4+ years of hands‑on experience in acoustics with underwater systems, sonar, hydrophones, or related technologies.
  • Strong background in underwater acoustics concepts: propagation, array theory, sonar equation, and acoustic communication systems.
  • Demonstrated track record of building and deploying working systems in real conditions, not just theoretical models.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB for analysis, modeling, and data‑driven decision making.
  • Experience building the hardware/software stack for acoustic systems, including:
    • Analog front‑end design and signal conditioning
    • Timing, synchronization, and embedded compute constraints
    • Interfaces such as Ethernet, serial, CAN, PPS
    • Transducer selection and design tradeoffs
    • Firmware, drivers, and logging/observability
  • Experience scaling products to production: cost‑down iterations, DFM/DFT, supplier engagement, manufacturing documentation, calibration procedures, automated test fixtures, and yield improvements.
  • Strong problem‑solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Eligibility to qualify for US security clearance
  • Electrical engineering background preferred, with emphasis on electrical design, signal processing, and systems integration; familiarity with electrical CAD tools, power management, and RF/analog design is a plus.
Nice to Have
  • Strong fundamentals in design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Proficiency creating BOMs
  • Familiarity with impedance matching and waterproofing methods
Location and travel
  • On‑site role in Stuart, Florida.
  • Occasional travel may be required for field testing, supplier visits, and program milestones.
What we offer
  • Opportunity to shape advanced underwater acoustics technologies used in challenging environments.
  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary team with a hands‑on engineering culture.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance
  • Generous PTO
  • Equity incentive program with significant growth potential
  • 401(k) match

If you’re a seasoned acoustics engineer who thrives in turning theory into field‑ready solutions and enjoys building robust production systems, apply to join Xtreme Sonar and help us push the boundaries of underwater technology.
