Job description

Kiewit is seeking an Underground Transmission Line Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical engineering and underground power delivery systems. This role will support the planning, design, engineering, and execution of high-voltage underground transmission projects across North America. The ideal candidate will have experience with underground cable systems, utility coordination, transmission design, and multidisciplinary project delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer underground transmission line systems for utility and EPC projects.
  • Develop routing studies, design drawings, specifications, and construction packages.
  • Perform cable ampacity, voltage drop, short‑circuit, thermal, and grounding analyses.
  • Coordinate with utilities, municipalities, clients, vendors, and internal project teams.
  • Support project execution from conceptual design through construction and commissioning.
  • Review contractor submittals, vendor drawings, and engineering deliverables.
  • Provide technical support to field construction teams during installation and energization.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards, utility requirements, and safety regulations.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and project planning sessions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Performs intermediate calculations under the supervision of a more senior engineer. Solves problems using well established scientific principles.
  • Has good understanding of the NEC and how to apply it to design on electrical systems.
  • Develops electrical data sheets for electrical equipment.
  • Develops low voltage and medium voltage wiring schematics with supervision.
  • Able to analyze data and understands the relationships and correlations.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and present finding to senior leadership.
  • Proactive about learning new information and skills.
  • Initiates development of personal objectives aligned with those of the organization.
  • Seeks feedback and uses it effectively.
  • Has good understanding of the complete design and has good input into ways of improving the design.
  • Utilize codes and standards to complete assignments.
  • Identifies the customer’s both internally and externally.
  • Handles various assignments, including rework, in timely manner to meet schedule deadlines.
  • Performs assigned work efficiently and effectively to maximize person productivity.
  • Performs quality checks of the design in a team environment to ensure accuracy.
  • Carries out assignments carefully while focused on details.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering minimum required.
  • 2-4 years’ minimum relevant experience in refining and petrochemical industry.
  • Receives limited instruction on routine work and detailed instruction on new assignment from more experienced engineer.
  • Adjusts to varying demands of work and performs well.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Present ideas clearly and in professional manner.
  • Participates on teams effectively. Accepts direction from the team. Individually contributes to success of the team.
  • Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with other to accomplish common goals and objectives.
  • Serves as point of contact for external or internal customers.
  • Follows through on commitments made to internal and external customers.
  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities with set expectations and meet deadlines.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in underground transmission or power delivery engineering.
  • Experience designing medium- and high-voltage underground cable systems.
  • Knowledge of utility transmission and distribution systems.
  • Experience with cable routing, duct bank design, grounding, and cable installation requirements.
  • Strong understanding of NESC, NEC, IEEE, and utility engineering standards.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced project environment and support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
  • Experience supporting EPC transmission projects.
  • Familiarity with transmission voltages from 69kV through 500kV.
  • Experience working with investor-owned utilities, cooperatives, or municipal utilities.
  • Knowledge of CYMCAP, CDEGS, ETAP, SKM, or similar power system analysis software.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Bentley design tools.
