Job summary

UC Santa Barbara is seeking an STDT ACAD ADVISOR 2 SV to coordinate undergraduate services in the Sociology Department and provide individual academic advising to 1600+ majors and prospective majors.

You will work under the Business Officer and Department Chair, ensuring FERPA compliance and accurate policy communication. The role supports quarterly scheduling, catalog updates, and course approvals in a collaborative, campus environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.
• 1-3 years student advising experience at college level.
• Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Knowledge of department/school/college policies, procedures, and requirements.
• Strong judgement and decision-making, problem solving.

Brief Summary Of Job Duties

Under the general supervision of the Business Officer, with additional direction provided by the Department Chair, is responsible for coordinating undergraduate services for the Department of Sociology. Along with another Undergraduate Advisor, provides individual academic advising to 1600+ pre- and full- majors in Sociology. Advises students and faculty on all aspects of undergraduate affairs (ie. major requirements, academic planning, course requirements, academic problems, transfer coursework, independent studies, and graduation, etc). Coordinates quarterly schedule of classes, annual copy for general catalog, and master course approvals. Has authority to act independently, making decisions that affect students' academic programs. Works with College of Letters and Science advisors to accurately communicate college policies to students. Provides input to the Business Officer, Department Chair, and the Undergraduate Program Committee regarding a wide variety of issues affecting students.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.
• 1-3 years Student advising experience at college level

Job Functions And Percentages Of Time

• 60% Academic Advising and Program Administration - Under the general supervision of the Business Officer, the Undergraduate Advisors provide individual academic advising for approximately 1500-1800 sociology majors and potential majors with regard to major and pre-major requirements, academic planning, course requirements, academic problems, and transfer work. Discusses major requirements and course offerings with potential majors. Evaluates students' progress toward degree, guiding them in formulating and planning appropriate schedules. Identifies students' academic problems and suggests appropriate courses of action and/or university resources available to them. Updates students on new polices or procedures. Meets with new transfer students during summer orientation and throughout the year. Assists in clarifying career and academic goals and develops appropriate education plans. Answers questions regarding counseling programs, social work schools and licensing, and academic, professional and teaching credential programs. Directs students to available resources including Career Services, , and individual faculty members. Uses Gaucho Blue (STAR) and Academic Advising Assistant (AAA) to track student progress and perform audits, course enrollments and schedule changes, ensuring FERPA compliance and confidentiality and the integrity of UCSB records accessed through this system. Processes changes of majors, requirement substitutions, course waivers, and independent studies. Reviews student's record for transfer work for major requirements. Conducts group advising sessions, for EAP, Honors, or transfer students as needed. Attends the Undergraduate Committee meetings. Provides input on matters involving undergraduate education and the department's program. This may involve matters regarding undergraduate requirements, the Honors program, and other issues students may have raised throughout the quarter.
