CORE JOB SUMMARY

The UMMG Staff Physician provides medical care to patients based on proper documentation in the medical record as outlined by the medical staff rules and regulations. The incumbent in this position receives patient assignments based on their educational discipline, expertise or experience.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Develops and carries out a comprehensive medical treatment plan addressing biological, psychological, and sociocultural domains.
  2. Performs physical assessment of patients in a logical and respectful manner.
  3. Prescribes medical treatment and clinical drugs to patients.
  4. Gathers essential and accurate information through review of pertinent records and interviews with the patient, family members, caregivers, and other health professionals.
  5. Reports to the responsible physician and complies with policy co-signature.
  6. Reports hazardous or unsafe conditions, equipment malfunction, and supply inadequacies to appropriate personnel.
  7. Reports all Quality Assurance (QA) incidences, including medication errors, to responsible physician using department guidelines.
  8. Assumes responsibility for increasing knowledge and expertise by attending continuing educational offerings.
  9. Makes informed decisions about interventions based on patient information, scientific evidence, and clinical judgment.
  10. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state regulations.
  11. Adheres to University and unit policies and safeguards assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

M.D. in relevant field required. Board certification or eligibility in Hematology and/or Oncology required.

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field required.

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of experience required.

  • Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure.
  • Discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Availability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Department Specific Functions
  • Serve as an instructor and attending physician in the Division of Medical Oncology, focusing on care and treatment of patients with malignant cancers, including outpatient care, on-call coverage, and weekend rotations.
  • Focus on treatment of malignant cancers, including research protocols, peer-reviewed publications, and funded clinical trials.
  • Develop novel clinical and translational protocols for treatment of oncological malignancies.
