Job description

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, and following established procedures, performs diagnostic procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries using ultrasound equipment. This equipment employs principles of sonography to produce images that provide information on the size and depth of tissues being examined.

All essential functions performed in this position address the age-specific needs of geriatric and pediatric patients. The role promotes patient and family-centered care and nursing services aligned with the mission, vision, and values of Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:

  1. Reviews and records pertinent history and clinical data to facilitate optimal diagnostic results.
  2. Positions and instructs patients regarding procedures to achieve desired diagnostic outcomes specified by the physician.
  3. Conducts ultrasound scans, adjusts equipment, and records anatomical data.
  4. Assists physicians during procedures such as biopsies and aspirations, including confirming cyst locations, maintaining aseptic conditions, and providing ultrasound imaging support.
  5. Prepares and presents case information and images to physicians for interpretation.
  6. Reviews orders for appropriateness and communicates with referring doctors as needed.
  7. Schedules examinations, coordinates patient transport, and manages supplies and equipment maintenance.
  8. Ensures cleanliness and infection control in the scanning area.
  9. Ensures patient safety and comfort during procedures.
  10. Participates in departmental operations, including maintaining accreditation.
  11. Establishes professional relationships with hospitals and external agencies.
  12. Mentors and instructs students and staff in ultrasound procedures.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Information:

Basic Knowledge:

  • One year of formal training in an accredited Ultrasound School or four years of experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer.
  • Current CPR certification from AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers.
  • Ability to operate ultrasound equipment and assist with patient positioning.
  • Analytical skills for optimal imaging results.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • ARDMS certification is required.
  • Knowledge of aging processes, human development, and cultural considerations in patient care.

Experience:

Twelve months of ultrasonography training through an accredited program or ARDMS eligibility to sit for the board exam.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Generally safe with precautions to minimize radiation exposure.
  • Frequent standing, lifting, and patient positioning required.
  • Visual strain from working in dimly-lit rooms and viewing screens.
