Job Description

Performs ultrasound exams for interpretation to aid in patient diagnosis. Utilizes independent judgment in the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency ultrasonic waves for diagnosis of disease. Collaborates with clinicians to ensure the appropriateness of studies and performs related administrative tasks.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Prepares the patient for ultrasound examination by positioning them on the examination table according to departmental standard operating procedures and explaining procedures in layman's terms to reduce pre-test anxiety.
  2. Obtains pertinent imaging and diagnostic reports required for correlation with the ultrasound exam being performed.
  3. Consults with the referring physician regarding patient history to determine the appropriate ultrasound examination required.
  4. Sets up equipment to administer specific exams efficiently, adjusting machine settings to ensure accurate results using technical judgment.
  5. Performs ultrasound procedures, recognizing the significance of structures visualized and differentiating artifacts from normal or pathological processes.
  6. Determines if further evaluation is needed beyond initial procedures.
  7. Observes the patient throughout the examination, recognizing and reporting any changes in condition or complaints such as fainting or discoloration, in accordance with procedures.
  8. Documents image details, labels studies, and maintains records and logs of exams performed.
  9. Performs regular calibration checks and adjustments on ultrasound equipment and troubleshoots mechanical issues as necessary.
  10. Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities listed are considered essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Duties not mentioned but related are not considered essential.

Job Qualifications

  • Vocational or technical school diploma required.
  • One of the following credentials is required:
    • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
    • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
    • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)
    • Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS)
    • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
    • Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS)
  • 1-3 years of relevant technical experience required.
