Job summary

Penn Medicine is a leading academic medical center focused on patient care, research, and education. The Ultrasound Technologist will operate sonographic equipment, manage the lab daily operations, and ensure quality standards across diverse patient populations.

In this role, you will perform diagnostic ultrasound exams, document findings, collaborate with Radiologists, and support lab maintenance. The position requires ARDMS credentials and CPR, with potential travel to multiple Penn Medicine

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduation from an accredited program for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
  • Completion of required ARDMS registry exams (Abdomen/OB-GYN/SPI).
  • CPR certification is required.
  • If providing portable services, valid PA driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic Ultrasound procedures with appropriate technique per policy.
  • Greets patients and verifies identity.
  • Explain procedure to patient and family.
  • Complete documentation of history and procedure; assist with billing.
  • Communicate diagnostic information to Radiologists and physicians.
  • Travel to various site locations as needed.
  • Participate in clinical education of students and staff.
  • On-call responsibilities may be required.

SCHEDULE

Full time (40 hours per week), M-F from 8a-5p, no weekends, no on-call, no holidays.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment. The Sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self –motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Select positions may require the Sonographers that are registered by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to perform limited Diagnostic X ray procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform all diagnostic Ultrasound procedures through proper technique selection according to department policy and procedure. This includes providing Ultrasound services on weekends, holidays, and call as scheduled. Patient care includes care to patients in the following age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
  • Receives requests, checking for special instructions from the requesting physicians; consults with Radiologists as necessary.
  • Greets patients and actively identifies patient to ensure correct patient and procedure.
  • Explains procedure to patient and family.
  • Completes required documentation of patient history
  • Completes examination and billing as required.
  • Documents technical observations for each procedure and obtains assistance as needed.
  • Evaluate, synthesize, and communicate diagnostic information to the attending physician.
  • Communicate effectively with the patient and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient's needs.
  • Follow established departmental procedures.
  • Use independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed
  • Integrate diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history and medical records, and adapt sonographic examination as necessary.
  • Recognize and adapt to the needs of patients with varying cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds.
  • May be required to travel to various site locations.
  • Participates in the clinical education of students and staff as required.
  • Performs visual preventive safety inspections for each Ultrasound room as assigned and reports any problems to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains necessary inventory supplies for each Ultrasound room as assigned and reports any supply replenishment needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Works efficiently and cope with emergency situations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public and health care team.
  • Participates in the on-call responsibilities for this position as required.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Graduation from an accredited program for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Completion of required classroom hours and material required to take the ARDMS Abdomen, Physics, and OB/GYN registry exams.
  • Completion of required clinical experience and hours required to take the ARDMS Abdomen, Physics, and OB/GYN registry exams.
  • If providing portable services: Valid PA driver’s license required
  • CPR certification
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2 years Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
  • Certified by the ARDMS (American Registry of Medical Sonographers) in and Vascular Technology (RVT).
  • Certified by the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) in Physics (SPI,) OB/GYN, and ABD within 18 months of placement in position.
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification may be required for select positions
  • Applicable to Maternal and Fetal Medicine Only: Certified by the ARDMS (American Registry of Medical Sonographers) in Physics (SPI,) and OB/GYN. Vascular Technology (RVT) and ARRT certifications not required. Nasal Bone/Nuchal translucency within 6 to 12 months of placement in position. Experience with performing fetal echocardiograms.
  • Applicable to Cardiology: OB/GYN certification not required
  • Bilingual in Spanish
