VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, OR (Vancouver, WA campus as assigned) is seeking an Ultrasound Technologist to provide general and vascular ultrasound for inpatients, ED, ICU, and outpatients. You will assist Interventional Radiology with US-guided procedures and participate in after-hours on-call rotation.

Base year with four 1-year option periods. Contract term: base year starting January 4, 2027.

Qualifications

  • ARDMS registered in Abdomen/Small Parts with two additional ARDMS credentials or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of current sonography experience
  • Hospital-based ultrasound experience in last 6 months (inpatient/ED/ICU)
  • Competence in scrotal and pelvic US and US-guided biopsies
  • Current BLS certification
  • VA background check, TB/immunization, and credentialing required
  • Ability to lift/transfer patients and work standing long hours

Responsibilities

  • Perform abdominal, pelvic, scrotal, neck, chest and extremity ultrasound.
  • Carotid and vascular duplex studies, vein mapping, Doppler assessments.
  • US-guided biopsies in interventional radiology settings; sterile technique.
  • Support intra-operative ultrasound with vascular/IR procedures.
  • Verify orders, QA images, and transmit to PACS; notify radiologists of findings.
  • On-call and after-hours coverage as part of team rotation.

Ultrasound Technologist (Medical Instrument Technician – Ultrasound)

VA Portland Health Care System — Portland, OR (Vancouver, WA campus as assigned) | Full Time | 40 hrs/week; 8-, 9- or 10-hr shifts, rotating weekends/holidays; on-call and call-back required

Position Overview

One full-time sonographer position supporting Diagnostic Imaging at the VA Portland Health Care System, a teaching medical center affiliated with OHSU. You will independently perform general and vascular ultrasound for inpatient, ED, ICU and outpatient Veterans, assist Interventional Radiology with ultrasound-guided procedures, and take part in the after-hours on-call rotation.

Contract term: base year starting January 4, 2027, with four one-year option periods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform abdominal, small parts, pelvic, scrotal, neck, chest and extremity ultrasound in the department and portably
  • Perform vascular studies: carotid, upper/lower extremity venous and arterial duplex, vein mapping, renal artery, renal transplant and liver Doppler, TIPS, AV fistula, pseudoaneurysm, graft/stent and aortic endograft leak assessment
  • Assist Interventional Radiology with US-guided liver and renal biopsies (native and transplant), cyst aspirations, catheter placements and intra-operative tumor ablation, using sterile technique
  • Support vascular surgery with intra-operative ultrasound
  • Verify patient identity with two identifiers, review orders in CPRS, QA images and transmit to PACS
  • Notify radiologists of critical findings; re-sequence the schedule for stat and emergency cases
  • Clean and process reusable medical equipment per VA SOPs; maintain supplies and equipment
  • Mentor ultrasound students and orient new staff
  • Serve on the on-call team for after-hours emergencies
Qualifications & Experience
  • ARDMS registered in Abdomen/Small Parts PLUS at least two additional ARDMS credentials (e.g., RVT, OB/GYN, MSK) — or an ARDMS-recognized equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of current sonography experience
  • Hospital-based ultrasound within the last 6 months, including inpatient, ED and ICU coverage
  • Demonstrated competence in scrotal and pelvic US, US-guided liver/renal biopsy (native and transplanted organs), renal artery stenosis and renal Doppler
  • Current BLS
  • NPI number (or willingness to obtain before submission)
  • Able to lift/transfer patients and handle equipment up to 50–100 lbs; prolonged standing
  • Must pass a VA background investigation, TB/immunization screening and VA credentialing
Compensation

$82–$93/hour, depending on experience and certifications

Overtime and on-call/call-back hours are paid in addition under the contract terms. Local position — no per diem or travel allowance.
