Job summary

Johnson Health Center in Lynchburg, VA seeks an Ultrasound Technician (sonographer) to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures under licensed physician orders. You will prepare patients, ensure image quality, document findings, and maintain patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of diagnostic ultrasound procedures and ability to operate technical equipment.

• Minimum of a two-year degree in Medical Sonography or related field.
• Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Responsibilities

• Positions the patient and equipment to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest, respecting the patient’s ability and comfort.

• Evaluates images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
• Documents in the electronic health record, as appropriate.
• Performs daily, weekly, and monthly quality controls in the Gus Vapor system as required by guidelines.

Job description

An Ultrasound Technician, also referred to as a sonographer, uses sound waves to image patients’ internal organs and to assist with the diagnosis of various diseases and conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient/Customer Relations:

• Communicates with patients in a courteous and professional manner in face-to-face encounters and via the telephone as needed.
• Educates the patient and family members on the patient’s diagnoses within the scope of knowledge and authority.

Staff Relations/Team Building:

• Participates with the provider in the implementation of the plan of care and patient education as related to current responsibilities.
• Communicates with other members of the patient care team regarding incoming patient data and reports that require patient notification and treatment interventions.

Clinical Duties:

• Performs ultrasound procedures by the order of a licensed practitioner.
• Prepares patient for procedures, including providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
• Maintains confidentiality of the patient’s protected health information in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
• Maintains patient safety in accordance with the National Patient Safety Guidelines.
• Operates ultrasound equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results.
• Positions the patient and equipment to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest, respecting the patient’s ability and comfort.
• Determines ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest.
• Evaluates images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
• Assumes responsibility for the physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
• Assists in maintaining records respecting confidentiality and established policy.
• Assumes responsibility for assigned area and reporting equipment malfunctions.
• Participates in the department’s quality assessment and improvement plan.
• Responsible for the control of inventory and specific ultrasound items.
• Practices aseptic technique and observes universal precautions.
• Produces a worksheet of measurements and supporting images as clinically appropriate.
• Documents in the electronic health record, as appropriate.
• Completes assigned tasks in a time frame appropriate for the situation; demonstrates flexibility to fluctuation of work load.
• Performs daily, weekly, and monthly quality controls in the Gus Vapor system as required by guidelines.
• Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the Ultrasound Technician position.

Administrative Duties:

• Attends and participates in staff and other JHC meetings as required.

Performance Improvement Activities:

• Actively participates in the JHC QI program.

Safety/Infection Control Activities:

• Attends all mandatory OSHA Infection Control trainings and follows general OSHA guidelines for infection control, including "Universal Precautions."
• Abides by all JHC infection control policies, including acute response measures in the setting of a public health concern or disease outbreak.

Physical Demand and Working Environment: Fast-paced office setting with travel to other offices often. Lifting and/or exerting force up to 25 pounds occasionally, with frequently moving of objects. Work requires speaking, sitting, bending, walking, standing, hearing, and stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motion with certain activities. 8 hours of constant computer usage. OSHA high-risk position.
