Job Summary

The Ultrasound Extern must be actively enrolled in an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program and maintain good academic standing.

Under the direct supervision of a registered sonographer, the Ultrasound Extern will participate in patient care and assist with ultrasound examinations. All images and related work will be reviewed and approved by the supervising sonographer prior to patient dismissal.

The Ultrasound Extern will perform a variety of technical and clinical tasks using ultrasound technology to obtain diagnostic images that support the identification and evaluation of anatomical structures, abnormalities, and disease processes.

The extern will also gain practical experience in patient positioning, equipment operation, image acquisition, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of a registered sonographer, the extern assists with patient care and ultrasound examinations while developing clinical skills in a healthcare setting. All examinations and images obtained by the extern are reviewed and approved by the supervising sonographer before the patient is released.

Responsibilities include assisting with patient positioning, preparing examination rooms, operating ultrasound equipment under supervision, and obtaining diagnostic images to support the evaluation of anatomical structures and potential abnormalities.

The extern is expected to follow departmental policies, patient safety standards, and quality assurance practices at all times.

Maintain all required education, certifications, and training applicable to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Medium to Heavy Work: Requires exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and more than 20 lbs. of force continually.

The employee must acquire and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate age care to the populations served within the department. This includes the ability to assess patient needs, understand growth and developmental considerations, and recognize the treatment and care requirements unique to each patient population.
