Job summary

Island Health in Washington is seeking a skilled Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to perform ultrasound exams in accordance with physician orders.

The role requires ARDMS eligible status with RDMS certification preferred, BLS, and at least one year of General and OB/GYN ultrasound experience. You will position patients, optimize images, and communicate findings to radiologists while maintaining safety and patient comfort.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an ARDMS eligible program.
  • Active RDMS certification; RVT certification encouraged.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Minimum of one year experience in General and OB/GYN ultrasound strongly preferred.
  • Work environment includes exposure to indoor health care conditions and moderate noise.

Job description

Duties
  • Applies insonating ultrasound energy to human tissue for diagnostic purposes upon written request of a physician or other medical practitioner.
  • Positions patients accurately to produce sonograms as prescribed by a physician.
  • Has correct understanding of ultrasound physics and machine knobology to produce accurate sonograms and troubleshoot equipment failure.
  • Maintains good working rapport with staff physicians and Medical Director of Diagnostic Ultrasound to provide excellent patient care.
  • Processes and critiques images to be read by radiologists.
  • Shares in call status to provide "around the clock" coverage for emergencies as prescribed by a qualified physician.
  • Communicates to referring physician as requested by radiologist.
  • Must be knowledgeable in anatomy and physiology as relating to diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Provides technologist notes and impressions.
  • Must have ability to obtain sonograms on various age groups and patients--prenatal through geriatric. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and can identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age‑specific needs.
  • Provides for patient comfort and safety.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to interact positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, co‑workers, subordinates, patients and visitors.
  • Must meet regular attendance standard and must stay at or below average sick leave utilization levels.
  • Transports patients to and from patients waiting area and/or patient rooms assuming responsibility for their safety.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness during procedures.
  • May answer phone and make appointments.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) eligible program.
  • Must maintain active RDMS Certification, RVT certification strongly encouraged.
  • BLS Certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in General and OB/GYN ultrasound strongly preferred.
  • The work of this position is performed inside, exposing the employee to indoor environmental conditions, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The employee may be exposed to dust, pollens, pollutants, fumes, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common a health care environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Demands
  • While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time; push, pull and reach; occasionally bend, sit, stoop and stretch. The employee will need full range of body motion, including handling and lifting of patients, should have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and medical equipment. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports are required; specific vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
