Job summary

MICA Steelworks is seeking a skilled Ultrasonic Inspection (UT) Inspector to ensure the highest product quality through in-process and final weld inspections. You will read weld symbols and shop drawings, document inspection results, and support the QA/QC team to uphold AISC standards.

Job description

The Ultrasonic Inspection, also known as UT Inspection, is a reliable method of detecting defects on or below the surface of materials such as seams, cracks, voids or inclusions. Inspection can also measure ID/OD wall thickness dimensions of tubing, pipe and other round stock to detect inconsistencies. The test results from ultrasonic inspection services provide valuable information about the reliability of materials and products without causing them harm during the inspection process. This skilled position is responsible for ensuring the highest degree of product quality is achieved via current manufacturing processes. This position will work with company-wide QA/QC team.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 3 5 years of experience in the welding of heavy steel assemblies, preferably with a portion of that time spent in an inspection role.
• An in depth ability to read and understand shop drawings, especially weld symbols.
• Basic knowledge of ASIC and AWS national codes.
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or other continuous improvement techniques desired.
• Maintain an attitude conducive to progress through positive change, continuous improvement, and an active contribution to the teamwork concepts.
• Possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must possess a strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, follow directions
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Successfully pass a background check, including criminal history, drug screen, physical, audiogram, and vision test.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Has overall responsibility for performing the visual inspection of welded joints at the assigned plant.
• Ensure that the fabricated steel is welded as planned, meets customer specifications, and inspections are completed as required to support workflow and sequence.
• Reports and maintains inspection results. Prepares documentation required by the customer for certification that all quality procedures were followed.
• Performs inprocess weld inspections on poles and heavy structural steel welded assemblies.
• Monitoring and executing activities related to ensuring that inspections of welded assemblies are completed to the requirements of applicable specifications and codes.
• Reads new project specifications.
• Interprets drawings, customer specifications and standards of moderate complexity.
• Is responsible for assisting the Quality Control Manager in administering the AISC program at assigned plant. Ensures that ALL productionrelated employees understand and follow applicable AISC standards, and that the shop is prepared for the annual AISC audit. Support the Quality Control Manager during AISC audits.
• Works with other QA/QC inspectors to organize inspection work to be done on a daily and weekly basis.
• Assists in identifying and solving quality nonconformances in a timely and costeffective manner.
• Assists shop employees with questions and clarifications on QC issues as needed.
• Works with QA/QC team to ensure the quality control program designed to make sure continuous production of products consistent with established standards is implemented and being followed.
• Addresses quality issues related to nonconforming material or components, and obtain timely disposition in order to maintain production flow.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Level II certification in U.T. or M.T. and supply the required documents
• Must have documentation of successful completion of the required academic hours of training, signed by an accredited level III instructor in that method.
• Must have signed documented proof of their logged minimum experience hours performed in the method they are seeking certification in, as required by A.S.N.T. TC 1A. or C.P. 189.
• Must be able to present previous documentation attesting to level one, level two or level three certification that was presented and signed by a A.S.N.T. accredited instructor along with the relevant test scores.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Manufacturing floor/shop and general office.
• Occasional travel by automobile may be required.
• During the course of work, the incumbent will be subject to seasonal weather conditions.
• Exposure to shop hazards.
