Design System Engineer (front-of-the-front end)

Job Description

We are looking for a Design Systems Engineer to lead the development and evolution of our design system. As a Design Systems Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our design system and revolutionizing the way design, development, and delivery is completed.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in user experience design, web product development, and is passionate about building systems that scale and drive efficiency. This role will collaborate very closely with our design, engineering, and product teams to ensure the system is cohesive, consistent, and easy to use across all workflows.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical implementation of the design system including typography, color, iconography and the tools, resources, templates, and documentations to support the system.
  • Write high-quality, clean, efficient, and well-documented code to create reusable and modular components that dev teams can use to keep a consistent look and feel.
  • Creating a library of presentational UI components authored, documented, and packaged to be consumed by the dev team.
  • Review of component designs and collaborating with designers during new component builds and ensuring accessibility.
  • Work in partnership with designers to ensure the brand, design vision, and UX best practices are properly translated into the application UI.
  • Fielding questions on component usage and fixing component bugs.
  • Createdocumentation of usage patterns for each component, along with any guidelines for accessibility.
  • Maintaining the components as a product, meaning handling versioning, deploying, governance, release notes, etc.
  • Hold retrospectives to identify challenges, successes, and preferences to continuously improve design system.

Must Have Qualifications

  • Front-end development at expert level in Angular, HTML, SASS, including coding for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliance.
  • Strong Understanding of Angular JS, Node JS or JSX.
  • Solid understanding of Storybook.
  • Advanced experience working with Figma to develop and manage components within a shared design system.
  • Familiarity with Figma's dev tools for sourcing styles and specifications.
  • Immense attention to detail with drive for pixel perfection.
  • Expertise developing and maintaining a custom component library using Web Components and the ability to build components in an agnostic way (so Angular, Drupal or any other framework can consume).
  • Creating CSS code that control the look and feel of the web experience, tackling colors, typography, responsive layout, animation, and any other visual aspect of the UI.
  • Leverage Agile, design-thinking, Lean UX, and industry design methodologies to help re-imagine new human-centered user experiences through collaborative problem solving.
  • Optimizing the performance of front-end code to create lightweight, fast-loading experiences.
  • Solid understanding with version control tools like Bitbucket or Git.
  • Have relevant and available online portfolio.
  • Must be a self-starter and driven to solutioning in a complex tech environment.

Nice to Have Qualifications

  • Experience in a broad range of design approaches and common UX patterns.
  • Experience collaborating with product managers, developers, and other stakeholders
