Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Technician delivers patient care utilizing the Relationship-Based Care model as a framework. The Nurse Technician provides care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by supporting Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence in clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Nurse Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient admission, transfer or discharge as assigned and supports the patient by performing activities of daily living, safely operating patient care equipment, promoting skin integrity and safety measures.
  • Documents patient information in EHR (such as vital signs, nursing care provided, intake and output).
  • Acts as a patient / family advocate by providing comfort, assistance and information and provides feedback to RN or LPN on patient care and condition as directed.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health values through teamwork and effective communication in an effort to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Participates in organizational, departmental and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.
  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution.
  • Collaborates with other staff to identify, promote and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.
  • Perform EKG as needed.
  • Assists with movement or transport of patients.
  • Responsible for restocking pre and post procedure areas. Maintain clean and neat environment.
  • Perform high level disinfection of surfaces and equipment within the department.
  • Collects specimens from patients using standard medical procedures.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Possession of a CNA license from an accredited institution/school/program. Illinois Department of Public Health – Health Care Work Registry

  • Current BLS/CPR and other required unit-specific certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred 2 years of outpatient/ ambulatory healthcare setting experience.
