Position Overview

This position has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the use of the nursing process. The incumbent accepts accountability, applies competent clinical knowledge skills, and uses independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by healthcare providers to whom care is delegated to achieve quality patient care outcomes.

The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and skills at the novice level necessary to provide care relevant to the patient(s) under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the lifespan. They must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs. This role provides professional nursing care for patients in an inpatient hospital setting.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and Licensure
  1. Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses, or appropriate state board where services will be provided, as a registered professional nurse OR current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  2. Graduate nurses must obtain licensure within 60 days of hire; licenses must be obtained before the expiration of the temporary permit unless prevented by circumstances such as pandemic-related NCLEX testing center closures.
  3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
Experience
  1. Less than 12 months of nursing experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following are general responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:

  1. Demonstrate safety and continuity of care using documentation, handoff tools/processes, etc.
  2. Create a plan of care using the nursing process: assessment, diagnoses, intervention, and evaluation of outcomes.
  3. Recognize patient safety concerns through appropriate resources.
  4. Provide education based on the unique learning needs of patients.
  5. Incorporate patient individuality and mutuality data in care delivery.
  6. Perform adequate patient assessments and documentation.
  7. Demonstrate teach-back method to evaluate education effectiveness.
  8. Utilize Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in nursing care.
  9. Participate in organizational patient-centered care models.
  10. Document problems and issues in the plan of care.
  11. Show growth in caring for more complex patients through consultation with experienced colleagues.
  12. Commit to lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry.
  13. Retain accountability for delegated nursing care.
  14. Recognize scope of practice for all interprofessional team members.
  15. Participate in holistic, culturally sensitive data collection.
  16. Assess the impact of family dynamics on healthcare consumer health and wellness.
  17. Integrate the American Nursing Association (ANA)’s code of ethics into practice.
  18. Identify discriminatory healthcare practices in culturally diverse populations.
  19. Individualize care based on patients' beliefs, barriers, and readiness to learn.
Physical Requirements

Must meet physical demands such as manual patient handling (minimize manual lifts to 35 pounds), strength and stamina for lifting/moving, visual and hearing acuity within normal ranges. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

Working Environment

Includes working protracted or irregular hours, around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased, water, and electrical hazards.

The CAPE program is a system-wide clinical advancement program to enhance professional development, reward clinical performance, promote quality nursing, and improve job satisfaction.

To advance to the next level, nurses must meet experience, degree, and certification requirements, and complete annual competencies. Levels range from 1 (no experience) to 6 (extensive experience with advanced degrees).
