Job summary

UHC United Hospital Center in West Virginia is seeking a patient care assistant to support licensed staff by delivering direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of an RN.

Responsibilities include observing patient changes, assisting with admissions and transfers, recording vital signs, aiding hygiene, preparing for exams, and maintaining a safe, clean environment. Some shifts may be varied and require flexibility.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Prior patient care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists RN with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient care tasks.
• Records vital signs and assists with personal hygiene and patient comfort.
• Assists in specimen collection and activities of assigned patients.
• Maintains a clean, safe environment to help prevent infections and ensure safety.
• Reports equipment repairs to appropriate personnel promptly.
• Prepares patients for examinations and procedures.
• Communicates nutrition concerns to RN (e.g., poor appetite, diet changes).
• Assists department with administrative tasks to support operations.
• Answers patient call bells and relays messages as needed.

Job description

This position performs nonprofessional direct and indirect patient care activities including personal, physical and comfort needs of patients, under the supervision of a registered professional nurse. This position will provide high-quality patient care in coordination with licensed medical staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. Prior patient care experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

2. Assists the Registered Nurse with admission, transfer, discharge and general patient care duties.

3. Records the vital signs, assists in personal hygiene and other patient comfort measures. Records oral intake and outputs (temperature, blood pressure and other monitoring).

4. Assists in specimen collection and other activities of assigned patients.

5. Assists in indirect patient care by maintaining a clean and safe environment to help prevent and/or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors and employees.

6. Reports all necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.

7. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.

8. Communicates with RN regarding any nutrition issues, such as poor appetite or verbalized lack of understanding of diet changes.

9. Assists department with administrative tasks to support the department operations.

10. Answers patient call bell and relays message to appropriate personnel

For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements:

1. Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
