Job summary

Northern Star (Pogo) LLC in Alaska is seeking a Mobile Equipment Mechanic Apprentice on a rotating camp schedule. The program combines on-site work with classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks through the UAF Diesel/Heavy Equipment Program.

Be a full-time employee with Pogo Mine while attending courses at UAF and working on site. The Mobile Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice reports to the Mobile Maintenance Leading Hand and will acquire knowledge and skills repairing and maintaining mobile

Responsibilities

• Assist with diagnostics, breakdowns, follow-up work and PMs in a safe and timely manner
• Learn workmanship by meeting standards, tolerances and testing of equipment prior to handover
• Assist with identifying correct parts and equipment for all planned and unplanned jobs as needed
• Attend daily pre-start meetings to ensure effective communication
• Assist with written and verbal handover for incoming crews regarding maintenance plans and issues
• Assist with ensuring correct history is collated and effectively recorded
• Assist in organizing all permits as required (e.g., isolation, confined space and hot work permits)
• Assist in highlighting equipment defects and issues effectively
• Learn cost management, how to avoid rework and unnecessary use of parts/services
• Assist with documentation and submitting prior to the end of shift
• Learn all safety-related activities, including Hazard IDs, pre-start checks, pre-start meetings, and incident reporting
• Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas
• Other duties as required

This position combines site-based work with classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks through the UAF Diesel/Heavy Equipment Program. What's the role?

The Mobile Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice reports to the Mobile Maintenance Leading Hand and the primary role is to acquire knowledge and skills repairing and maintaining mobile heavy equipment using hand tools, power tools and diagnostic equipment.

Duties Include:

• Assist with identifying correct parts and equipment for all planned and unplanned jobs as needed

The Details:

When not attending courses in Fairbanks, you’ll be working a 2‑week on / 1‑week off schedule of rotating days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions—including but not limited to extreme and changing weather, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, artificial light, and confined work areas—apply.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company‑provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, a games room, an exercise & weight room, a sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land‑line phone, Wi‑Fi and cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi‑Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction, and Tok, Alaska.
